I read a scene from "Hiroshima, mon amour" in one of my books on film making.
The morning after scene, where she is looking at her new lover's hand while he's asleep, which reminds her of the hand of her old lover how she last saw him... it was used as an example of mind sequence on film. I will rent it soon. in keeping with the thread, it's not new to me now, but it was several years ago when I first saw it... The Thin Man with Myrna Loy and William Powell. I always watch it this time of year. Count how many times he takes a drink. Astonishing. |

I'm a fan of Elaine May's work... and usually when I mention this film most people haven't heard of it - "A New Leaf" with Walter Matthau and Elaine May -
It's HILARIOUS... and it's the kind of comedy you don't see a lot of lately - stellar character work, and a sincerely profound life message without being syrupy or sentimental. Best line: "PUT THEM BACK!!!"

"Sanjuro"...Akira Kurasawa.
The Clint Eastwood film "For a Few Dollars More" is based on it. Very cool. |

I just saw an amazing Bogart film that was recently restored, "in a lonely place." It was gorgeous, and if you can find it on DVD I would totally recommend it. I love the dialogue in old Bogie movies. For me, some of his comments seem so offhand that they almost go under the radar but then my brain says, hey, waitaminute - did he just say that?? CHEEKY!
Here's the blurb re: the resoration: Quote:

The movie the "Apartment" with Jack Lemmon and Shirley McLaine was great. Lemmon plays a bachelor and his married boss, and co-workers use his apartment (he is too much of a nice guy or push over to say no) for their trysts. One morning he comes home and finds McLaine in his bed passed out. It is a very funny movie, kind of sad though too.
