Judge Accused Of Saying Women Ask To Get 'Smacked Around'
Village Justice Resigns After Alleged Comments ALBANY, N.Y. -- A village judge has resigned after he was accused of saying most women enjoy abuse and ask to get "smacked around" and that domestic violence cases are a waste of the court's time. Hunter Village Justice Robert Hamley, 50, resigned after he "acknowledged that he could not successfully defend the charges against him," the state's Commission on Judicial Conduct announced Tuesday. Hamley, who isn't a lawyer , resigned Nov. 17 from the $4,500-a-year, part-time job in this small Catskills village about 100 miles north of New York City. He had been justice since 1997; his term was to expire in 2005. Hamley was accused of telling a victim of domestic violence in court that such cases are "dragged out" and a "waste of the court's time." He also was accused of telling a state trooper that most women enjoy being abused and they asked to get "smacked around," according to the commission. HOW THE HELL CAN YOU GET A JUDGESHIP WITHOUT GOING TO LAW SCHOOL????

you could do summer stock in the Catskills!!!!
His status was "Justice of the Peace" or Magistrate. Often you'll find that in small little hamlets, one person who is mayor, sherrif, judge all rolled into one. Usually a prominent business person. It still helps though to at least have SOME legal training, if not being a licensed member of the Bar... It's possible his comments were taken out of context, lots of witch-hunting going on out there with regards to Sexism and Racism. Kind of like communism in the 50's. Hopefully it's curtailing the worst abusers. If he did say those things it was not a very bright thing to express publicly, let alone to a cop privately...

can't imagine how funny i'd think that site was if i was a woman.

I can't even tell you how quickly the bile rose in my throat after clicking on that link...and I only read the first paragraph or two.
Having a bit of experience on this issue (as well as being admittedly hyper-sensitive to this type of trash), ...nevermind I'm probably not in the best mood to comment on this right now anyhow! Hey Xeroxs: I'm not 'mad' at you for posting that, I assumed your intention was to illustrate abuser mentality, not support it.  Beale: I'd vote for you Edit to add: I am the Queenie of sarcasm - would someone please explain to me how exactly that site is funny?

Here in the sunny state of FL, you can get your justice of the peace license and marry people and do all kinds of things right in the mail. It's just one step up from your handy Notary license. I had a girlfriend who was a notary file for that so that she could preside over my wedding.
