More than just a game
I play a game in my classes sometimes- my students must name a certain amount of famous people, living or dead, fictional or real...
I write the names on the board. Invariably, George "dub-ya" Bush is named first. The last time I played this, the rest of the line-up was: Tony Blair (PM of UK), Koizumi (PM of Japan), Eric Clapton, George Clooney and Harry Potter. Then, I give my students a choice: all these people are in a hot-air balloon over the desert. The fuel for the balloon is running low and in order to save the others, one must be pushed out to his demise. Who should go first and why? The politest people will hum and haw, but the other's blurt out right away "George Bush!" When I start laughing, my other students realize that I'm not a Bush supporter, they usually pipe up with their views, now free to talk about how they feel about my country's leadership in the world. Generally our discussions go onto what it means to be successful and influential, in politics and the world. My students can't vote in America. And we all know this is mid-term election, usually the kind of election most Americans pass-off on voting. But the choices you make do effect their lives, sometimes in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Especially now. Last edited by amanda : 11-05-2002 at 11:10 PM. |

I did. First thing I did this morning. Morning voting is the only way to go, no lies. We got to use these cool new electronic voting machines. They were SO much better than the punch cards. But I didn't get a sticker.

I voted absentee! I was so excited to fill in the boxes (you just check them in blue or black pen), and send the ballot back. Not that it had much of an effect. As though there's any question about who will win in Texas. Again people, I'm sorry we let Bush out to drive the rest of you nuts.
NekoPunk, that's a bad excuse! I turned 18 the summer before the 2000 election and went to school in the fall! And I still voted. Come on, democracy is fun...surely someone else was driving to a polling site today (and if you wanted to vote in your home state, you can get a mail in ballot!)

You are so lucky you didn't have to see all the negative campaign ads. That's the best thing about the elections, no more campaign ads.

I since have not missed an election. I feel if I miss just one it becomes even easier to miss the next, then the next, then the next until I become one of the millions of fat lazy cows more content on chewing my cud and mooing about all the problems with the country than I am about getting off my bovine hanuches and doing something to change the world. Don't just vote, become part of the election process: become educated, become invoved, campaign, donate, make some change. Last edited by Deviate : 11-06-2002 at 08:16 PM. |

NekoPunk,
Go here and click on "Application for Voter Registration" to get an Acrobat Reader file of the Mail-In Voter Registration. Print it, fill it out and then mail it to your Country Commissioner. http://www.state.tn.us/sos/election/outlines.htm If you don't have Acrobat Reader, download a free version here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html Hope this helps. -st.
