Church settles Passion row with film body
March 31 2004 at 03:19AM The South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (Safact) has settled with Cape Town's Fountainland Worship Centre over screening a pirate copy of The Passion Of The Christ a week ago, before its cinema release. The church has agreed to sign documentation saying that it will not screen the film again. Legal proceedings were instituted on March 25 against institutions that were illegally screening pirated copies of the film. Such screenings can open any institution or individual to both criminal and civil prosecution. Following legal correspondence with a number of churches intending to screen illegal copies, letters of apology have been received, with the churches claiming ignorance of the law. The churches have undertaken to co-operate in whatever way they can.
