Technologically challenged

So I was thinking (and this was partially sparked by the first part of Milan Kundera's book Immortality) that my great-grandparents knew how pretty much everything they used day in an day out worked. You know...light switches and stuff. But most of the things I use every day are a mystery to me. I could ask about a ton of them, but I have one big question that kept me awake all last night:

How does the internet work?

Please help!

Hey! Thanks a million! I always figured companies must have some sort of agreement or something to connect to each other, but I never heard anything about it, so I wasn't sure.

howstuffworks.com is now one of my new favorite sites!

How Stuff Works- another internet addiction

OOOh boy. I've been receiving their email newsletter for over a year now. I've learned all sorts of useful and slightly-less useful tidbits. One of the articles this week: how chocolate works.

Gotta love 'em
