Well, I visited the website and read the entire thing. According to the site, they are strictly a charity; that makes then answerable to the feds as well as their sponsors. I emailed them with the question of their honesty and how much 50 inches of hair was going to fetch on the LOL blackmarket. I should have signed llona's name, but I used my own I'll let you know if and what I hear.

If you want to be sure. Call the cancer association near you and ask who donates real hair wigs in your region. Then call them and ask where you can donate your hair.

Your local cancer association may even be able to answer your question.

Go ahead and donate. They need it and it is appreciated.

I have seen the results.

Okay...on the website there are three "Before and After" pics. Does the last one look a little odd to anybody else? It looks like she went from 12 to 22? Maybe it is just me.

I thought that at first, but then I thought: maybe she refused to have her picture taken after she hit a certain age, or had a really bad wig before

I don't have any doubts about the authenticity of the charity..llona did. She woudln't answer us when we asked where she got her information
I wrote to them to prove her wrong.

My Googling found no web pages talking about fraud associated with Locks of Love. I would expect this kind of thing to be on Snopes if it weren't legit.

The lady who founded it does have a for-profit wig business.

The Locks of Love website does say
"
Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.
"

Ilona, do you have a source claiming that the charity is fake?

In Canada, all registered charities are listed on the Canada Revenue Agency website. Maybe there's a similar listing for LOL.

Of course she doesn't have a source. Ppl who are full of shit usually don't.

Maybe I'm just jealous cause the longest I can grow my hair is to the middle of my shoulder blades before I get sick of it & hack it to the middle of my neck.

I know for a fact that many children receive human hair wigs at no cost from LOL. My nephew has sickle cell anemia, spends half his life in Children's Hosps alongside tons of kids w/cancer. My sister says the kids w/wigs mostly get them free of charge through LOL... this info seems to be the case talking to parents at Children's hosps in 3 different states. They can't all be wrong.

I verified their status as a non-profit here:

guidestar - database of nonprofit organizations

To give Ilona the benefit of the doubt, maybe there is a scam organization using the name elsewhere - totally possible.

this just came in my e mail.
************************************************** ****

The person who posted this is very misinformed. We are a 501 (c) 3. We sell unusable hair which is too short, grey or chemically damaged for $5/lb. These proceeds go toward the cost of making the hairpieces. Even though we use donated hair, each piece costs us $1,000.

We save our long hair for the children. Two inches of the length is lost in the manufacturing process so that long hair is very sought after. We are constantly looking through our inventory for 20 + inches of hair in particular requested colors. Please see http://www.locksoflove.org/manufacturing_process.php for more information on how are hairpieces are made.

I have never heard of a ponytail being sold on Ebay or any where else for that amount. Perhaps if it was Brooke Shields or some other celebrity.

Hope that answers your questions and dispels any rumors about our organization. I appreciate you asking the question so that you know the facts. I don't understand why some people portray themselves as authorities on things which they know nothing about.
Sincerely,
Susan

NO, DO NOT CUT

Hi Ilona,

You look great with your long hair as it is.

Do not cut, you will regret cutting for a long time (as long as it takes to grow back).

Groetjes,

Jeroen
