Be careful what you wish for

Have you ever wished for something and then gotten it and wished you'd never wished for it at all? (can I say wish one more time in this sentence?! bah).

For example, I was whining last week because I wasn't busy enough at work and this week, whoa, knock me on my butt, one-armed paper hanger, kind of week. Busy, busy, busy.

So tell ... what did you wish for that you later regretted?

Quite honestly, to get married. When I was young and idealistic I thought it would be so romantic to make a lifetime commitment. I knew even then that I was a poor prospect for a permanent half of a pair, but I liked the idealism behind the concept.

I don't know, at this ripe old age, why in the world anybody would have married a hardheaded, stubbornly independent woman like me, and I don't know what I was thinking. He swears it's been wonderful, but I don't know how he puts up with me.

My husband is a darling man. And he practically lives for being married. He's such a fine family man. He loves the whole lawn-mowing, school-play-attending, family vacation-taking agenda. And I love him for worlds. It isn't that there's anyone else. I've told him time and again that if anything happens to him, I'll never remarry, and I mean it.

But I don't like being married. I prize my solitude, cherish peace and quiet, treasure the inspiration that comes from silence. I want to do like Georgia O'Keeffe and move out to New Mexico and do my art and visit him occasionally, like Georgia visited Steiglitz.

I know how to earn money, make household repairs, pay bills, make decisions, handle crises and balance finances. I resent having regular dinnertimes, "issues" to discuss and inlaws. And I want the TV to stay on baseball when I put it there!

But he is such a sweet fellow....

I'm so impossibly selfish!

I like what Kate Hepburn said on marriage: "Men and women should live next door to each other and visit often."

When the Gods want to punish us they answer our prayers. Motto I live by.

True enough, and had it not been for Louise she'd probably have married him.

I probably am just disappointed because my marriage didn't turn out to be a cliffhanging codependent disaster like I was raised to expect. Our family is very big on tradition. LOL!

This question reminds me of something I heard frequently in Native American 'pre-cememony' instruction. It's real common for the Medicine Man to say a few reminder do's n' don't prior to beginning the ceremony and they usually included,

"don't pray for a patience or a man...you just might get what you ask for"

(patience meaning, you'll get 'lessons' that will force you to learn patience)
