i was escorted out of a store today called Canadian Tire where i took my car in to get serviced for an oil change and filter and lube.
i went in, signed a paper that said 24.99 for the service, and came back later and was billed for 79.52. the deal was during the inspection the mechanic noticed my back break disks were bad and machine rotored them, and dinged me for the labour cost. when i protested, they said that they are not allowed to let a car that is unfit for driving back on the road, that they would be responsible if something happened. Fair enough, but my car is not old, its a 2001. they persisted and were very very rude to me, helping other customers while i was standing there asking questions. answering the phone while i was questioning the bill, acting like it was no big thing - which, ideally it wasnt but how it was portrayed to me really pissed me off. when they stopped helping me all together and kept trying to usher me to the cash to pay and leave i yelled at the girl, whos husband i assume was the mechanic, who then asked me to calm down... then i said no you calm down and i smashed over this big thing full of fuel injector cleaner and like 100 bottles fell, then i kicked the tire rack and a bunch of tires fell over he said they should of called first to let me know what was happening and i said thanks thats all i wanted to hear, grabbed my keys and left with like three guys following me to my car to make sure i left. the moral of the story is, admit your fcking mistakes i dont give a shit if you do anything, make an error - charge me too much, to little - accidently bang my sister - whatever. Just admit your god damn mistakes, its an easy thing to do in life, admitting when you're wrong. everyone fcks up, just dont sit there and act like it didnt happen, i swear to christ i would of slammed that mans head into the register if he helped one more customer other than me and tried to get me to pay and leave |

Scene at Crappy Tire! Whoa!
I am far meeker than thou, JT, so I have never kicked anything in a store ... but I do agree with you about admitting mistakes rather than pretending they never happened or treating the customer like they must be nuts. Farking CIBC used to fark up 100% of my transactions when I was living in TO and using my line of credit to live on while going to school. I think I had ONE person out of dozens actually say to me, "I'm sorry that happened, that was our mistake." The rest were the phone equivalent of your cash register dude. |

Much as I adore you, Jeez, I have to say smashing over the display was probably not so good. But I can certainly understand why you did it!
I don't blame you for being angry. They should never have performed work without your authorization. To then stall you and attempt to push you on through without addressing your concerns was just plain wrong. Part of being a responsible, honest businessperson is to do what you say, when you say, for the amount you say, unless the customer asks you to do otherwise. If there's a reason that might not happen, the customer needs to be warned well in advance of the possibility and allowed to decide for him/herself whether to proceed. And part of being a savvy marketer is making sure that everyone leaves happy. Sometimes this means heading off an unpleasant scene at the pass no matter what the circumstance. And "the customer is always right". (In this case, the customer was ACTUALLY right, and you should have had your concerns addressed immediately.) It is not good to lose one's temper and smash things (yeah -- like I haven't done it myself!), but it is even worse for a business to set up a situation that is obviously going to be frustrating to the customer and then ignore his attempts to get their attention. In a word, they asked for it. They owed you an immediate apology and no extra charge, not an attempt to run around the end and pass the whole thing off as your problem. I hope you have a better evening than your day turned out to be. |

JT - I don't know if it's just where you live, but where I live, they don't work on ANYTHING until they get your approval,

jt, im shocked. you should have disembowled them all, then hunted down all of their living family members and made a human bonfire with them and all of their friends.

Yeah but the real question is: how much Canadian Tire money did you get?

Dude, it's barely significant in Canadian dollars. However, as a child, it was THE best money in the world.

hmmm...an alternate aproach would have been to simply say.
Sorry, but your a liar, I looked at those disks before bringing it in...there was nothing wrong with them. Since you never called, to authorize doing the work...and since you shaved off all the evidence from my rotors...prove that they were bad...prove it pal, till then here is 25.00 bucks, have a nice day...and keep the change. cuz seriously, they can rip someone off doing that shite...teach em a farking lesson. Doing work over 10% of an estimate without authorization is also illegal last time I looked. edit...ooops...Canadian Tire...not sure what estimate laws are in Can. hell...i'm not even sure what they are now in US. |
