I had a bad Amazon.com addiction. I had to delete all my saved credit cards on my computer, and I put the actual plastic ones in a ziploc baggie. Then I put it in a mason jar full of water. Then I froze it.

Now, if I want to use them, I have to wait for them to thaw out. That's usually a good 45 minutes, enough time to figure out that I won't die if I don't buy something.

But there's always the microwave.......

I just had to learn to say "no" to myself, no matter how I whined, begged and pleaded, and keep the damn plastic n the wallet, where it stays in case of emergencies.*

What?

Whaddya lookin' at?

Is that, like, a bad thing????

Don't worry -- I have enough other vices, neuroses, aberrations, fetishes, compulsions and just plain bad habits to keep us all going well into the next century. I may not whip out the plastic, but I cannot pass a Wal-Mart without ending up with a cart full of junk plus some cheap cookies.

It's enough to put my tree-hugging, Cesar-Chavez loving, egalitarian, ecologically conscious, socially progressive, Kathie Lee-scornin' ass to shame, I tell ya.

*BTW, really, really really cute shoes, handbags, etc., the like of which you will never find again at such a price, constitute emergencies. But they have to be on sale, and you have to have a replacement plan, i.e., know where the cash is coming from to pay off that month's balance. And if you have to sell blood, well, hey, sometimes that's just the way it goes.

Speaking of compulsive spending, I'm not much one for shooting people, but here's a likely candidate if I ever take it up:

I think rather than prison time she should be sent to Afghanistan...

He signed over his power of attorney to friend Laura Cristell, 45, before he went overseas last year.

But instead of paying his bills while he was serving in Baghdad, she spent $13,000 of his money on what she told police was a shopping problem.

If convicted, Cristell will face prison time for theft.
I could be wrong, but doesn't power of attorney allow the person in charge to spend the money how they see fit? How can this woman be charged, he was stupid enough to sign over pwr of attny to someone he probably shouldn't have.

Well, it's pretty sad when the mistake of trusting a friend costs you your savings. Yeah, he was foolish, but it in no way excuses her. I give my husband the keys to my car when I am out of town; I certainly don't expect him to sell it and buy a big-screen TV and say "tough ta-ta" when I come back! (If he ever does, you can all come over and watch MLB after the funeral. LOL) Trust should mean something; plenty of people do things that are perfectly "legal" that are still reprehensible. I don't think this is so much about the letter of the law as basic human decency; the two can be and often are exclusive.

It's not illegal to be a rotten piece-of-shit "friend", and it's not illegal to be a trusting fool, but that doesn't make this right.

Still, legally, she may well be exonerated. Who knows?
