In the aftermath of the haiku-commemorated testicle removal of Ze's hapless pup, it occurs to me that his name has rarely been spelled the same way twice. (Seymore, Seymour, Seymor, Seymoure... .) And even Ze in his blog spells it diefferently every time he mentions it, and I was wondering it maybe the various spellings *were* an important part of his name.
That made me think about all my pets' names over the last many years and I wondered about yours. In somewhat reverse order: Cats: currently: Ebola Zaire ("Bolie") -- orignally Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy ("Bossie") Sua Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor ("Mosfet") Waldo, who gave birth to two litters: a. Schmuel, Yussel, Heime, Yenta, and Malvina the Orphan b. Aunt, Jemima, Pancake, and Wafflemix Lizards: Spike and Fluffy Hamster: Hinckley Mouse: Spot What were your favorite pet's names? |

We have a cat named Feller, after baseball pitching great Bob Feller, who assisted the Cleveland Indians in their one and only World Series win in 1948.
When I was a very little girl, I had a cat named Something -- because the grownups told me I had to call her Something. We have another cat named Mooch. If Mooch was a human being, he would look like Roughhouse from the old Popeye cartoons. Thrice broken nose, huge biceps, wifebeater undershirt and crew cut. THAT kinda guy. We have a cat named Gus, who looks like a gargoyle. We used to have cats named Bridget, Gracie, Karen, Ginger, Frankie and Sheva. We have a cat named Mel who thinks he is God. We haven't told him yet. |

My cat was named for a very specific reason: I was always irritated at the vet's office, when the aide would come out and call the pets' names, rather than the owners. Instead of "Mr. Smith, the doctor will see your pet now," they always say, "Fido, the doctor is ready. You can go into exam room 2." I got my cat in the middle of the mad cow scare, and since she's black and white and the size of a cow, I decided to name her Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, so the vet's aide would have to say it whenever the cat went in for her shots. (Then, I read "The Hot Zone" and changed her name to Ebola Zaire. Sure enough, without blinking an eye, the vet's aide comes out to the waiting room and with a completely serious expression says, "Ebola Zaire, please come with me. The vet will be with you in a moment." ![]() |
