odd bits of history

Facsimile transmission over wires or faxing was invented by Alexander Bain, a Scottish mechanic 1843.

Alexander Bain invented a fax machine capable of receiving signals from a telegraph wire and translating them into images on paper using clock mechanisms.

That is interesting!
I just read in the book The Orchid Thief that the guy who invented Monopoly retired at the age of 46 and dedicated his life to raising and collecting orchids.

4-wheeled parallel skates were labeled old-fashioned in 1910 by the Kennedy Skate Co. of Chicago. Of course, the 2-wheeled Kennedy promised the same comfort, durability and light weight as today's skates.

If figure skating with inlines is what tickles your toes, you might have had to wait until 1950. "Figure Skating With Roller Skates" These skates made in Japan had three inline wheels and a clever ratchet gear that kept the front wheel from turning backward during quick turns.
