Atkins is hard to follow... harder than a regular diet... because theres carbohydrates in almost _everything_.

I practically live on carbohydrates in huge amounts and I'm skinny as a rail, so I can't see how Atkins is "for real". And I would think it would be bad for your kidneys. And can you eat that way the rest of your life?

I don't eat fried stuff, I don't eat sugar and I don't eat processed meat. It works just fine.

It makes your kidneys work harder. If you have pre-existing kidney damage (as many diabetics do), Atkins can cause renal failure.

Mrs Funky's aunt had this problem after a doctor suggested she try an Atkins-style diet to manage her blood sugar. )TYhis was before the effects were fully ubderstood) An emergency trip to the hospital later, Atkins had a bad rap in her family.

So, if you're interested in it, make sure you read all the info on it carefully... then decide if your body can handle it.

No, you are not supposed to eat that way for the rest of your life. Atkins is supposed to be 6 months, tops?

And yes, those of us with kidney damage have been told not to even THINK about following it.

Interesting. I did not know that.
A friend of mine was on it for about 8 months and lost over 45 pounds.

South Beach.
Better diet, better for you. Almost like the Atkins for the first 2 weeks, then it adds in fruits and vegs.

I recently read a paper by the Dietitians of Canada warning against use of the Atkins, South Beach and Zone diets in relation to health risks inherent in high protein/low carb tweaking. They also noted that most weight loss in these diets, when followed to the letter, ultimately come from calorie restriction.

In the 80s, when I started in the eating disorder biz, everyone was carb fearful, thanks to Scarsdale. In the 90s, thanks to Susan Powter and Stop the Insanity!, everyone was fearful of dietary fat and protein and felt relatively comfortable with carbs. Now thanks to Atkins, everyone's fearful of carbs again!

The best way to lose weight and maintain weight loss is moderate calorie restriction (not so much that you'll get cravings and binge yourself back and beyond) plus increased activity, over a long period of time. Not exactly rocket science, but not what people like to hear, either. And as advice goes, it's free, but people value advice they paid for more.

If you want long term effects, all diets are pointless unless you incorporate some kind of physical exercise.

Pretty much if you want to lose weight for the long run (and losing weight in the short term is pointless because you just screw up your metabolism) you have to make a life change. However big/small you make it depends on how much you want to lose.

These gimmick diets are... gimmicks.

And they're freaking unhealthy and a waste of time that could be better spent on exercising, eating normally, thinking about things other than weight/food/eating.

(Also, I remember my physics teacher saying something about the Atkins diet having changed it's name [from something to Atkins] because it caused lots of deaths and huge health problems, but you can disregard this bc I forget the name it previously marketed under.)

A hundred years ago there was a diet by a Dr. Stillman aka The Drinking Man's Diet. Called that because it was the first diet to incorporate 8-10 glasses of water in to the plan. Basically, it was an Atkins prototype. My mom spent all of her time in the bathroom which we found hysterically funny at the time
