News understatement of the month

PFP, are all Wisconsians this quick?

Bodies in lake identified as father and two sons

Sunday, June 20, 2004 Posted: 8:25 PM EDT (0025 GMT)

PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A father and two sons missing from Chicago for more than a month were identified Sunday as the bodies that washed ashore on Lake Michigan bound together by nylon rope and tied to bags filled with sand.

"We consider these deaths to be very suspicious and this case is being handled by law enforcement as a homicide," said Pleasant Prairie Police Chief Brian J. Wagner.

Well, DUH!

I can't believe this hit national news already.

First things first, that IS NOT Pleasant Prairie. Pleasant Prairie is out by I-94, not the 7 miles east to Lake Michigan. That is actually Carol Beach, where they were found.

I grew up in the county this happened in, so you'll have to forgive my being mad at that.

And yes, all law enforcement around here are about as smart as that. When I got pulled over by state patrol last weekend, @ 3am, he asked me if I'd been drinking. On my way home from LaCage. LOL

And I don't think it's a homocide, I think it's a suicide. I think the man walked into the lake w/his boys, with the rope tied through their belt loops & around the little one's waist. He was from IL, what did you expect?

In all seriousness, a horrible crime. I am tired of people drowning around here. First the little girl who fell in the river & the sister who jumped in after her to save her, now this.

As a parent, I can't even fathom how fvcked up one's mind set is, how very tweaked a parent's view of reality would have to be - or how it would get to that point..... to do such a thing. Wow.

It IS horrible. Amazing what people are capable of.

Do you remember that woman years ago in North (or South) Carolina, who drowned her kids by driving her car into a pond and leaving them there?

This reminded me of an unrelated story, but it combines a similarly creepy crime with another creepy American activity - voting:

I was doing campaign graphics for a local political strategist, and among his clients were two who were running for seats on a local hospital district board -- there were four seats open to the top four vote getters. ALL the promotions for these two candidates were combined and identical. I forget the guy's name, but the woman's name was Susan Smith, the same as the woman who drowned her kids.

The news of the crime appeared on the news shortly before the election, and I called the strategist, and said, "Oh my god! You don't think people will mistakenly associate OUR Susan Smith with THAT Susan Smith do you?" thinking such a mental connection might cost her the election.

THe strategist (a bit of a cynic) said no, that ANY name recognition would be good, and he wasn't worried. I thought he was nuts until the election. Susan Smith came in third and easily won a seat on the board, but her co-candidate, who was promoted on the same mailers, with no separation of message, came in fifth or sixth and wasn't elected.

Apparently, voters went into the booth, saw the name Susan Smith, and because it sounded familiar, they cast their votes for her!

Creepy.

But on the bright side, anyone who desires a political career and has the same name as this guy they just pulled out of Lake Michigan would be well advised to quickly run for office in Wisconsin. (And judging from the quote from the local police, he would have an EXCELLENT chance of winning, dontchya think?!)*

*That's not implying PFP would vote for him for that reason, of course.
