Do you embarrass easily?
You're FACE SAVING: Embarrassing yourself in public makes you feel that you have let yourself down badly, and so you feel compelled to take immediate action to restore your social credibility and to regain public approval. After all, you have an image and a reputation to protect! You do this by either becoming "verbal" with an apology coupled to an excuse, or by using humour to deflect the situation. This is accomplished by a witty remark, or by smiling (the most common response of this group), or by laughing. Using humour in its different forms is a face-saving mechanism for you, but also a generous social tactic for everyone else involved, as it reduces the stress and anxiety created by the embarrassing event. And if you laugh first, you are no longer the butt of the joke - the incident diminishes.

me too, although i don't agree with their analysis of the situations. i'm sorry, if i come to a table with my fly down i would crack up 'cause it's funny, not because i feel shame.
not that i don't embarrass. it's just things they put on the quiz are not things that regularly embarrass me. -st. |

Ah yes, that'd be me then. If it were an Olympic event, I could blush for England.

![]() Click here to take the embarrassment quiz! You're IN DENIAL: Embarrassment makes you feel as if your composure is threatened: you wish that you could simply disappear, or that the earth would swallow you up. However, you cover for this extreme internal reaction by externally "distancing" yourself from the situation - "denial" is another word for it! You manage this by reducing eye contact: turning away, lowering your gaze, or covering your eyes with your hands. Or you may simply not say anything or you may just walk away (as many men do). All of this serves to increase your psychological distance from others, as you try to pretend that the embarrassing event never occurred - however, observers may not be amused, as they mistake your 'coolness' for 'aloofness'. Next time say something to acknowledge your embarrassment (such as an apology) to regain the approval of others.

As I thought, I am a face saver too. I can't think of any other actions that will get me out of embarrassing situations.
