sound mirrors
i remember being taken to see the sound mirrors at dungeness as a child. they were built during the first world war. listeners with stethoscopes had sat in chambers beneath the concrete structures to try to monitor the direction and strenghth of enemy planes taking off in france. apparently they never worked though, and would instead pick up traffic noise and the sound of propellers of passenger liners. they must have fallen into disuse when radar was invented
and i remember we had to trespass to get close to them - there was a trailer park and a barbed wire fence they probably still stand there, decaying monoliths evesdropping on the sounds of dungeness in this century  |
