Favorite party food?

So, I'm having a party to celebrate my birthday and graduating from college and my family is insisting that we have a party. Other than beer and liquor, what are your favorite food items to find at a party? My sister needs a list soon so she can start organizing...

Clowns are scary.

I'm always grateful when there's a veggie tray at parties... Carrots, peppers, mushrooms, lightly steamed asparagus (or stick it in the microwave for a minute or so on high), cauliflower, broccoli, little plum tomatoes, snowpeas, jicama... dip!

I used to cater receptions, and I found that the best things to serve are usually bite-sized finger foods. I'd usually make things, but what's really easy and very popular are things like mini quiches (spinach, mushroom, cheese etc.), mini taco rollups, mini egg-rolls, and stuff to dip them in. You could get some ready-made dolmas (stuffed grape leaves), pile 'em on a plate with lemon slices - very pretty.
Cheese and crackers or some nice bread (sliced - don't make the guests cut things if they're drinking) is always a good thing to have - a wheel of Brie and sliced cheddar is usually a good bet. Pile some grapes on the plate too - pretty
You can get party-sized amounts of finger foods at places like Smart & Final, very inexpensively. Hot hors-d'ouvres - yum.

Lebanese flat bread spread with dip/smoked salmon/cream cheese etc. Roll them up and cut them into fingers. They're easy to eat with a drink in one hand and filling too. Great for that winning combo of alcohol and people who forget to eat beforehand.

Ooo! Try this - unless people are teetotalers it's fun and tasty and, ya know, gets you tipsy...

Get a bunch of cherry tomatoes. Remove the skins (you do this by boiling a pot of salted water, cutting little "x"'s in the bottoms of the tomatoes, dropping them in the boiling water for about 10 seconds or so, then scooping them into ice water so they stop cooking - the skins should come off pretty easily).

Put all the tomatoes in a shallow dish. Cover them with vodka, and soak 'em in the fridge for a looooong time. Overnight is good.

Serve them with lime wedges and margarita salt to dip 'em in. Num.

Speaking of tee totallers, these will get the non-drinkers going quicker than you can say sh*tfaced.

Sangria

Use red wine for the base. Add in gin and rum *to taste*. Top up with lemonade and finish off with ice cubes and cut up lemon and oranges.

Or Mystery Drink.

Midori, vodka and lemonade.

(So called because a blonde friend of mine spent most of an evening guessing at the ingredients).

Leave dirty paper plates and used napkins all over the buffet table, 2 carrots, 1 broccoli spear and most important - 3 large serving bowls.
Bowl 1 contains potato chip crumbs
Bowl 2 needs 2 teasppons of yoghurt smeared round it
and Bowl 3 has salmon cat food smeared round it.

When you guests arrive explain that the buffet was so popular, and that the invite said 6:30 not 8:00 and look apoplogetic.

That way they think you DID spend all day making a sumptuos feast, and that they should have checked before setting out.
