Lottery winner
Seems the latest lottery winner in the UK is causing a stink.
He's a rapist currently on a life sentence, out for the day (supervised of course) and he bought a ticket when getting ciggarettes at the store. Apparently the folks are all pissed off that he's getting to keep all his money. Mind you, I dont think we would like the Government telling us what to do with it either. Quite a little debate is being raised I hear. British Press Lottery The case of a convicted rapist who has won millions of pounds on the Lottery continues to outrage many of the papers. The SUN claims it has been inundated with support for its campaign to stop criminals pocketing Lottery fortunes. In an editorial, the MAIL says the case underlies our ambivalent attitude to the game and what it believes are the ill-deserving places Lottery money sometimes ends up. It says the rapist's victims should be encouraged to sue him in the civil courts for every penny of his windfall. This would not only serve the ends of justice it says - it would also help to restore the Lottery's reputation. The DAILY MIRROR is not alone is calling for a change in the law to prevent criminals convicted of serious crimes from being able to benefit from Lottery windfalls. The DAILY STAR points out that inmates are barred from buying Premium Bonds or playing the Pools but there is no law to stop them trying their luck on the Lottery. The paper says the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, should hang his head in shame - and close the loophole now. However, the INDEPENDENT warns against a knee-jerk response. It says the outrage over the fact that undeserving figures occasionally win the Lottery betrays a fundamental misunderstanding about the game. A lottery is exactly that - a lottery.
