are you superstitious
what is your favorite superstition..?
Your in for bad luck if you singing before breakfast Don't wash clothes on New Year's Day, or somebody in your family will pass away. If you sneeze on a Monday, you sneeze for danger. Sneeze on a Tuesday, kiss a stranger. Sneeze on a Wednesday, sneeze for a letter. Sneeze on a Thursday something better. Sneeze on a Friday, sneeze for sorrow. Sneeze on a Saturday, see your sweetheart tomorrow. Sneeze on a Sunday, your safety seek: The devil will have you the whole of the week.

I initially said , "No, I'm not superstitious.", but then I make a wish on the first star I see at night., which in Houston ususally turns out to be a planet.

I have always believed that if I am ever evil/sneaky/stupid enough to finally succumb to the temptation to have a fling, my husband will come screeching into the driveway in the middle of the day, even though he has not come home from work in the middle of the day in fifteen years.
You won't find this one anywhere in Folklore 101, but if it was in a book, you could look it up, to paraphrase Yogi Berra.

I was raised in an oddly superstitious family or maybe we're just odd. We don't sing at the dinner table, and we toss salt over our left shoulder if we spill it.
I think that most superstitions are based on the reality of logic at the time they were created. Walking under a ladder is dangerous for the walker and the climber. Black cats are hard to see at night or in dim light. Singing at the table might cause choking. Broken mirrors might cut you, but I think that the cost and rarity of mirrors caused the superstition. Either way, I am not afraid of a cat crossing my path. I've broken mirrors by accident.... and I've heartily sang at the dinner table. It is funny then to see me throwing salt over my shoulder or crushing my egg shells. I too wish upon stars, and eyelashes. It is whimsy. I like whimsical things.

What's that one about, anyway? Until I get an answer, no eggshell is safe around me. |

Why eggshells are the very thing witches need, to sail to sea where they will destroy the ships and all men aboard.
How could you not know that? ![]()

crushing eggshells is fun. but then you get egg goo in between your fingers. but it is still fun.
if you sing before breakfast, you are likely to get socked in the face. please keep all songs and smiles to yourself till I have fully ingested my first cup of coffee. this is your first and only warning. thank you. in a few minutes you may proceed. |

Very superstitious, writing's on the wall.
Very superstitious, ladder's 'bout to fall. Thirteen-month-old baby broke the looking glass. Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past. When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain't the way. Hey, hey, hey. Ooh, very superstitious, wash your face and hands. Rid me of the problem, do all that you can. Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin' strong. You don't wanna save me, sad is my song. When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain't the way. Hey, hey, hey. Very superstitious, nothing more to say. Very superstitious, the devil's on his way. Thirteen-month-old baby broke the looking glass. Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past. When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain't the way. Hey, hey, hey. Very superstitious.

So Aphro, I would be interested in where the whole "knock on wood" thing came from. . . . you have any ideas about that??

i pick up pennies
and i'm not fond of black cats running in front of me. when we were in NY (who was with me to witness this?) a black cat ran across our paths as we were getting into the elevator on the 11th floor of the hotel. now that's just spooky. |

Knocking was supposed to make it so they couldn't hear, or another option, knocking three times made it so that they couldn't hear your good fortune.
