Relive the emotions of previous games

bottom of page

except the "year" and "city" timelines whizz past at different speeds, out of synchronisation, and occasionally in different directions...

Having been a cross country runner and track & field participant, I have always had a special place for the Olympics.
My favorite Summer Olympic memories:

Vasily Alexeev at Montreal in 197(whatever) in the heavyweight weightlifting competition. All the other weightlifters would come out and do all this stuff to get themselves all pumped up for the lift and then go up to the bar and foul.
He'd come out, stand at the back of the stage and stare at the barbell for about ten seconds, walk up to it, set himself, and lift it over his head. He was amazing!

Bob Beamon breaking the world long jump record in 1968. Nobody could believe what he'd done! It still stands as one of the most amazing feats in field events I've ever seen.

Michael Johnson in Atlanta, 1996 in the 200 meters. I swear his feet never touched the track!

Greg Louganis. 'Nuff said. Best diver ever.

Got a new one. Just now:
UK's Paula Radcliffe in the Women's Marathon. Weeping by the side of the road after she dropped out with nothing left to give. Four miles from the finish.

I keep on getting screwed up because ever time I read the title of this thread I think it says 'Relieve.'

Did anyone else get choked up when American wrestler Rulon Gardner placed his shoes in the middle of the mat to symbolize his retirement last night?

yeah, me neither.

Yes, I did.
Thinking about all he's been through since winning the gold medal and that he was actually able to come back from all that and make it into another Olympics. He is truly a great athlete.
But I still think he looks like a shaved gorilla.

No doubt, Daver, about the shaved gorilla resemblence. I don't know anything about him, but just seeing his emotion expressed so clearly on his face...

yeah. I got weepy.
