That's always been a bit odd to me, too.
When I collect in person, I ask for whatever someone wants to give. One year I collected close to $900 using that method.
Unfortunate thing is, if you collect more than $500, they consider you a VIP and hound you for the entire following year with emails, phone calls, and mail.
Haven't checked my total in a while, as long as y'all keep me below $500 you're welcome to keep donating!

Anyone who puts me above $500 will get all the junk mail they send and all the spam they email me filling up your literal and virtual mailboxes!
