The Ultimate Fan?

This is something I've been wondering for a while now. Just what is it that makes someone an Ultimate Fan? Is it the fact that a person owns everything that was put out w/the individual (or group's) name on it (& also knows all of the songs/movies/what have you that the person has produced)? Or, could it be more of a personal belief?

Example:

I've been a Weird Al Yankovic fan for about 20 years now. I've seen him live 4 times, & absolutely love his movie, UHF. However, I don't know the name of all of his bandmates, nor do I own all of his albums (yet). In my own twisted way, I consider myself a big fan (even w/out owning all of the physical things he's produced).

Another example:

I've also been a U2 fan for the same period of time. While I've only seen them live twice, I love their music immensely. However, in their case I know all of the band member's names; but I also don't own all of their albums (yet). Again, I consider myself a big fan of theirs.

Just because I don't know everything about (or own everything pertaining to) the aforementioned artists, does that make me any less of a fan? And who ever said that to be an Ultimate Fan, you had to own everything that your favorite celebrity produced anyway?

What's your take on this?

I am a HUGE fan of the Big Bang Band . I own a piece of everything they have ever made...even some of their original props, mockups of their programs, early versions of their CD's and every version of every graphic thing ever done by them is on my hard drive...

errr...but then, I am in the band, and the graphic artist for the band. so that may not count.

I consider myself pretty much an ultimate Bowie fan. I have adored him since I was 12. I don't, like, have the cover of Aladdin Sane tattooed on my back or anything, but Bowie is one of the defining influences of my life. I think that qualifies for ultimate fandom. It's not whether you have everything they ever did or know every lyric by heart or have attended every concert, etc., it's whether they influenced your own creativity. A "real" fan is one who follows not only the work but the entire career of an artist and can even define certain points in their own lives by what the artist was producing at the time or by how the artist's work influenced them at crucial points in their creative development. By that definition, I am an Ultimate Bowie fan.

(But not a fan like Robert DeNiro in "The Fan". heh heh)

If I were the ultimate fan of anyone, it'd have to be Warren Zevon. I met RatMan because of him (he was the first person I'd ever known who liked him as much as I do), the rat child wanted to learn violin after hearing "Desperadoes Under the Eaves," and my default summer clothing is a pair of cutoffs and my Enemy of the People T-shirt. Zevon was a scurrilous SOB, a heavy drinker and an out of control drug user, and he managed to stop it all for the last 18 years of his life and finally be a father to his kids -- an act which, when undertaken by anyone is intensely, extremely admirable, let alone when you've got the world's most socially acceptable excuses not to stop (like money, and an identity wrapped around your substance use). I cried like a complete idiot when I woke up one morning and the radio told me he'd finally died.

I like him so much that I left him the hell alone and let him live and die in peace while I enjoyed his music.

I can't hear "Keep Me In Your Heart" without crying.

That's true respect.

My favourite memory of Zevon was seeing him on David Letterman in 1986. Letterman mentioned that Zevon had been heralded as the "next Bob Dylan," which they agreed (as in literature if you are heralded the next Proust) generally meant that you'd remain forever obscure.

Zevon said that he had a lot in common with Dylan, and Letterman asked what he meant.

"Well, I applied for the job," he said. "Spokesperson for my generation."
