Should I shave my cat?
Dinz, getcher mind outta the gutter! Better yet, try raising your mind up to the gutter.
Seriously, I vacuumed the floors when I got home and I picked up enough cat hair to make another cat. I think if I shave her I won't have to vacuum half as much. Of course, if I do that I'll have to take out her back claws seeing as how her front paws are already clawless. I'd rather not live with regular lacerations from an angry cat. Then, there's her teeth. She bites when she's feeling threatened. Should I defang her? Anyone else encountered this problem? |

A lot of cats are bitey - it's just a warning and usually not too hard, but it is a bad habit.
Before I worked for Airtran, I worked for the Humane Society. I don't think declawing would help, and defanging is just not good - soft food all their lives and that stuff is not only expensive but messes up their kidneys. Excessive shedding is often a sign of stress - you might want to get her checked out at the vets to make sure there's no underlying nasty going on, but if she's ok, get a professional groomer to do a lo - shed groom... Or you could get a lion cut, like this.... ![]()

No! It's almost winter time and she'll be cold if she doesn't have her fur jacket to wear. Besides that, she'd be so embarrassed having to walk around in the nude...
I know of no solution to the occasional biting. Although if mine bite me, I usually slap them on the side of the ass (not too hard, though, of course) and they don't like that. So they hardly ever bite me. If they get irritated or scared, they just run away instead of attacking me.

Hmmmmm...that wouldn't be a bad look for her.
Se seems to shed naturally. It isn't any kind of stress. All cats should live like her. I think she just naturally sheds that way. She always has. Another advantage to shaving her would be fewer hairballs to deal with. It's a bit disconcerting to wake up in the middle of the night and find one with your feet as you head to the bathroom in the dark. So: Shaved, totally delawed, and toothless. Straight razor or electric shaver? |

Something else to think about is that totally declawed cats can develop an aversion to the litter box - the ends of their 'fingers' have been amputated. Personally I wouldn't go with the declawing or defanging, just a professional groomer, then see how it goes from there.

She loves her litter box! She can hurl that stuff into the next room when she's inspired enough!
She used to "help" me clean it out when she was a kitten. The look on her face when I'd make her stop was like, "Well you're throwing it around, why can't I?" Her front paws are already declawed and that's as far as I'll go. I don't mind it when she bites. She does love nips all the time when she's getting lovin's. Kitty Bliss overload and that's the best way to let out a bit of energy. And, no, I'm not gonna shave her. Unless, of course, there's a contest with a cash prize involved... |

I use my Dad's old remedy. Slop a tiny bit of petroleum jelly on her nose and she licks it off and it lubes her insides.
We had a Persian cat a long while back who got so sick and tired of having the stuff on her nose she'd eat it off my finger! ![]() Seriously, Janet is quite healthy and is in no need of medical assistance other than her annual trip to the Vet. Whom she hates. |

I'm sure she's a very spoiled baby. I have four cats, one is totally deaf and all are spoiled rotten. One likes to crawl up into my hair when I'm trying to sleep. Two came from the Shelter when I worked there - they were going to be put to sleep...
![]() this is Crystal - the deaf one. She has one amber eye and one blue eye.

if you declaw or defang a cat here in the NLs you have to spend 2 months in prison, i think that says enough about what it does to the cat.
if your cat sheds a lot of hair, which is normal in this time of the year, you need to brush her every day to get rid of the hair and prevent hairballs. after a week or two it should be better with the hair shedding and you can brush once every 2 or 3 days or even once a week with a normal amount of shedding. if the cat's scared and she bites, well what can i say? it's natural.. it's the cat's way of saying don't do what you're doing.. slap a cat that bites and it will hate you and bite you more. you can try to spray with one of these: or clap your hands really loud, but that works best when the cat is still young.. give the cat a safe place to run to when she feels threatened, i'm sure she'll start biting and scratching less! |
