In the end it's ze's property and he has the absolute right to do as he pleases. It's a free "market."

And people have a right to vote with their feet if they experience it as elitist, and find the thought of maintaining secrecy among peers they presumably like repugnant.

we had a fairly long discussion about it actually. we had a poll to see if we should keep it a secret or talk openly about it. we decided that entrance to any place whose requirements were a minimum number of postings would only encourage rampant postings... which some of us saw as a bad thing. so we elected, as a group, to keep it quiet. we figured each person who passed the threshold would see for themselves.... it also meant we had to keep in mind that all y'all would eventually get in the door... so it created an incentive to continue to be respectful of anyone below the threshold.

Well, you can look at it however you want.

I look at it this way:

If my kid came home from school and said, "Hey, Mom. I've brought my friend Sarah home from school, remember her? We're going to play in my room, okay? Well, she's standing just outside because I wanted to let you know not to tell her about my clubhouse, you know, the one I bring all my school friends to that I've played with a lot more than I have with Sarah... well, don't tell Sarah because I'm waiting to tell her about the clubhouse until we've played together exactly ten times."

I'd do two things:

1) Haul Sarah's poor ass in and personally show her around the clubhouse.
2) Have one hell of a long talk with my kid after Sarah left (and after I got over my shock and dismay at not having taught her better already).

That, and it explains where some of the "regulars" have been. I have to wonder how hard it was for them to keep a straight face every time someone asked where they had been or if they were okay.
I didn't wonder about most of them anyway, but I will now never wonder where or if they are ever again.
