the "what was I thinking?" thread

It's 3:38 am PST. I am sitting at work, waiting for the guy at Kinko's to tell me whether my .cdr file arrived safely and can be printed. This after sending a .pdf, traveling over to Kinko's, spending about an hour finding out that there was something wrong with the file, driving back to work.

It's my co-worker's last day tomorrow. I volunteered to bake two cakes (still not started ) and put together a book of pictures and people's memories/stories about said co-worker. Trust me, it will all be worth it, and it's only one night out of my life.

But what the heck was I thinking, trying to do this all in one day? Jeesh.

It's 10 'til 8. I just got home about 10 minutes ago. Kinko's *still* hasn't printed my ONE booklet.
The guy who was supposed to be able to do it came in at 6:30 (I stood at the counter and waited for about 45 minutes after another guy completely farked up the order, over and over... How hard can it be? I put the pages in the order I wanted them. I get told they're formatted wrong. Okay, fine, I'll research next time, but for now, how hard is it to put them in the correct order? Kinko's SUCKS.)

So anyway - this guy has an attitude. I'm in no mood. I've been waiting 6.5 hours for one copy of an 8-page, double-sided color booklet to be printed. I do *not* want to hear again that my document's formatted wrong. I do NOT want to hear that it's not this guy's fault. I just want to hear when my doc is going to be printed. Is that so much to ask?

GAh. I have to start the cakes.

kinkos sucks rocks. I've never had any luck with them. they hire entry level computer personnel and have a really high turnover rate. just when th guy behind the counter knows what to do, he leaves. Don't EVEN get me started about the people on the night shift.

What are my alternatives? I seriously need to find a different place to print stuff. Kinko's has managed to screw up and waste my time every single time I bring something to them - I'm not kidding!! (I know you know I'm not.)

Guess I'll have to do some research...

There are some print shops over here that will do small orders like that. It beats going somewhere like Kinko's that have so many things going on at once.

I use a local copy shop CopyDotCom. They are a store of one here in Houston and they have never screwed anything up AND they are intelligent!

I would try for a local quick copy type place. Maybe some mom and pop venture.
Good luck.

i hate it when i take the time to write a long post, then the time i take logs me out automatically and my post is lost. darnitol.

I’ll just append this with the last thing i was going to say in my long techy rant:

did you use sigs?

oh, and-
what apps do they take?
RGB or CMYK? .ps printer compatibility or RIPs or neither?

Cakes turned out FABULOUS!!! I finally finished them at around 5pm and then I showered and zipped off to the party...

I had called Kinko's corporate office to complain about what happened, and ended up being routed back to the center manager of the store. We had a *good* conversation; I told him what happened, and he both apologized for how I was treated, but also explained what the reps are dealing with (many urgent huge jobs and machines that sometimes don't cooperate). I listened and agreed that it must be stressful (but in that case why don't they hire someone whose main job it is to take care of random late night needs? eh...) Anyway - he then gave me Sherae's little memory book for *free* (they did the work within an hour of my conversation with the manager... heh...)
So I picked up the book - made it to the restaurant around 7pm - was applauded when I got there (silliness), frosted the cakes in an empty booth, and presented them, decorated with flowers. Some people were already ready for dessert (it was a sit-down dinner kind of party) and everyone said it was one of, if not THE, best cakes they'd ever had So it was all worth it... And Sherae LOVED her book!
BTW - the cakes were three layers of almond genoise; on the bottom layer was a layer of marzipan topped with fresh peaches and then some zabaglione/marzipan cream; the middle layer was topped with caramel, more peaches, and more z/m cream, and the whole thing was frosted with whipped cream with the rest of the z/m cream mixed in, and stabilized with peach Jello. I definitely think I'll make it again...

Oh - and the doc was a .cdr, formatted as 11 x 17" pages with two pages each on them... CMYK, converted to bitmaps.
Turns out I should have just done 8.5 x 11" pages, one after another, ordered as I wanted them. I made it way too complicated... so. Live and learn.
