A metaphor for...

"Something's here I'm not getting
Though I try, I keep forgetting
Like a memory, long since past
Here in an instant, gone in a flash
What does it mean?
What does it mean? "

To me, the most rewarding part of examining art is reading others indepth, researched, heartfelt, interpretations of what you see before you.....just for the sheer humor alone. It could be my sick sence of humor but *wow* some of these people have got to be laughing all the way home for yanking your chain on some of these.

Below is a photograph that I saw at an exibition called "Photographers of Genius at the Getty". I was trying to behave the best I could, but I read the little blurb under it and laughed so hard that I got a few disapproving stares. It said something along the lines of how the photograph is a metaphor for life and the photographer framed the waterfall by juxtaposing the old tree and the young tree representing the past and the future showing us how life will prevail blah blah blah....do you see what I mean? All in all, it is just a @#$&^$%# waterfall.

more info

So, this is what I challenge you to do:

Tell me what this photograph "really" represents...and make me believe it.

Well, the waterfall is seen between two trees, surrounded by brush and bush. I know that you know where this is going...

The photo depicts the eerie stillness and irrevocable passage of time that at once combine to make you really wish you had stocked up on your alpha-hydroxy acids and not smoked quite so much dope in college. Witness the waterfall; could it not also be construed as a length of fantastically clean but tattered skivvies hanging from the tree of dimension? So are we in our hearts, all of us: scrubbed and chaste yet filled with the shame of the unmentionable. Visible in the trees are new, mature, and decayed growth -- mirrored in the neuronal structures that govern your every day and night -- yes, even dictating your facility with granny knots and touch typing.

Hahahaha -- that's great.

When I was in college about *hhrmph* years ago, I wrote poetry. It got published in our college's quarterly. My poem was analyzed by my classmates. I found their ideas hilarious as what I said in the poem was really all I was trying to say. LOL

The photograph represents the journey of life.
The height of the falls as it crashes through the early stages.
No fear, no obstacles. It is graceful and powerful. Flanked by life and beauty, it pays no heed, just continues on its journey, spraying its surroundings and offering no apologies.
It lands hidden from our eyes only to re-emerge later tired, and slower, but farther ahead. With wisdom gained from experience, it takes shorter steps, but continues to move forward. The life around it is older and has seen more. It flows, constant, unrestrained. Life.

Photographer thinks to self prior to shooting photo....

"oh thank the heavens, finally a composition with something other than just trees and twigs, even has a strong diaganol light and dark thing working for it, and intersected by strong verticals, and a waterfall to boot. If I had to walk another damn hour through nothing but goddam trees and bushes, twigs and leaves. Jesus Christ why can't someone invent a camera under 50 lbs...and the glass plates, not to mention the tins of chemicals. Christ what made me think outdoor photography was a "great idea", please God strike me with lightning if I ever contemplate doing a wilderness photo theme again.
Alright now, not too wet over here, and I can still see the damn falls...is the light ok? screw it i'll fix it in the dark room if it isn't. Yep, I can make up a line of Spiel for this composition...hmmm, light/dark, something about opposites perhaps. Good and evil?...no, that's tired. I know, something about life, old age and youth perhaps, they eat that shit up nowadays...oh well, shoot the stupid picture and get the hell out of here...I think there is still a patch on my ass that hasn't been bit by mosquitos yet. Lens cap off? Ok."

We saw this exhibition in Canberra

The photos on the site aren't brilliant reproductions. In real life they made your skin crawl.

And we visited that haunted room in Old Parliament House. Not creepy at all. Just don't talk to me about the Ladies Room next door. Cold sweats. And not from anything toilet related either.
