Pro: I've lived here off and on all my life and can probably get around town with my eyes closed. Close to several good hiking and canoeing spots. Friendly people. A survey once said we are one of the most successfully integrated cities in the USA. Beaches and forests! Good seafood. Cons: 90 degree plus temperatures alllllll summer! Rain can flood the streets in a heartbeat. Hurricanes. Skeeters. Cockroaches bigger than my feet. No mountains or waterfalls. Mediocre Mexican food. Edited to fulfill fodder's request for location. you didn't even state the locales
i'm talking about cities here's an example: austin, texas: well, the weather is near 100 degrees all summer, and it was in the high 80s up until a couple days ago (november 1st). although it's a "big city" it feels very small, it has bearable traffic, easy to get around, relatively affordable with relatively good schools. (although the traffic is getting worse and they're adding tolls on already existing roads) most of the independent music stores are closing down, but it still has waterloo music and music festivals like SXSW and ACL. the UT campus is near downtown, something like 50,000 ppl attend. there's a 'keep austin weird' slogan that plagues bumper stickers and store windows, nice areas for cliff diving and swimming rel. close it's definitely the coolest part of texas, most often compared to athens, ga. I was in Austin quite a lot when I lived in San Antonio. You're right, it's an oasis in the middle of the state.

I'm in Houston.
Pros: big art exhibts and science exhibits stop here often, good Mexican and Tex-Mex are always available, we support all our sports teams even when they lose, the last time I saw snow here was in 1989, if I ever get really sick, the Medical Center here in Houston is world-renowned, it's green year round, St. Arnold's Brewery, House of Pies, NASA, the humidity keeps you looking young longer, it's easy to fly nonstop internationally and the biggest pro of all (for me) I have a three hour buffer between me and my family. Cons: traffic, you must own a car to get around the city, the humidty saps your energy, smog, nobody takes us seriously, we are prone to flooding because of too much concrete, summers suck here because it regularly gets to 90° and 100°F, people are assholes in traffic

Long Beach
Pros: Sunny with a chance of sun, awesome culture, tons of great dining and shops, 1 hour from anything you can imagine (snow, mountains, desert), tons of great beaches, museums, you name it. It is perfect really. Cons: No superwalmart or supertarget. Bastards. |

Portland, Oregon is alright. If you live anywhere in this state this is the best option. The rest of the state is really rural and conservative, but Portland is mostly liberal. It is a very pretty city with the most parks in the city limits of any city in the US. The public transit is great. We're close to Mt Hood and the ocean and the desert on the other side of the cascades. It rains all the time, but summers are super. The job market here sucks ass right now and it doesn't look like it's going to bet better.

Los Angeles
Pros: You can get anything, I mean *ANYTHING*, you want, if you have the cash and are willing to drive a bit; never boring; wide diversity of cultures; some really sweet people; Northern California just a few hours away; relatively mild weather. edit:Oh - I forgot - near mountains and beaches. Cons: Traffic; terrible public transportation; a bright line of isolation between classes; a lot of flaky, rude, self-absorbed people; bizarre value system; very little mental health care funds and therefore lots of homeless mentally disturbed people walking around; lack of funds for health care and a glut of immigrants soaking them up (please forgive me - I'm all for people coming here, within limits, and I'm not pointing out any ethnic groups - but when there's hardly enough to go around for the legal citizens, you gotta draw a line); mountains and beaches becoming more polluted every week despite the efforts of various environmental organisations; very little serious culture; lack of respect for intellectualism; all-consuming pop entertainment industry; media slant causing anorexia and bulemia; drug pushers; gang violence; insane drivers... I'd better stop here.
