Cool Hey Coffee, Pomegranate Hat Boy...

Coffee... I know you've said you have a Pom-tree and make jelly, etc. Yummmm by the way

I grew up in So. Cal loving Poms each Fall. The only way I knew how to eat them as a kid was to cut one into 1/4's, take it outside on the deck and munch away... juicing a mouthful of seeds at a time and spitting out the hard white inner seeds (hence being outside).

How do YOU eat them? Is there a better way that you could share? I have a bowlful on the counter calling my name. Oh and, can you freeze the innereds some how?

Damn there is nothing like em

I don't eat many...saving them for juicing for jelly...more on that in a sec.

When I do eat them...I split and peal them and remove every seed in the kitchen sink, before starting to pop small handfulls into my mouth, gently mashing them to a pulp, suckn out the juice, and spittin the seeds out, usualy into a napkin. By de-seeding them in the sink first most of the mess is avoided and I don't bother going outside.

For juicing...get a brand new clean cotton napkin. Wash your hands very well or wear gloves, and put a large handfull of seeds into the middle of the napkin and "satchel" it folding up the corners...twist the bundle as tight as you can without tearing the cloth (I got strong wrists...i've killed napkins this way)...it gets 95% of the juice out of the seads with Zero pulp or seed mixed in.

BTW...pomegranate juice does not stain hard surfaces, it is pretty easy to clean up...i've even found "spots I missed" a week later and been able to wipe them away. Cloth, though, especially cotton, is another matter, think Tye dye.....and it will "bleach" your hands yellowish if you juice a dozen at a time...only lasts a half a day though.

POMEGRANATES ROCK!!!!

Jim Simonian has grown pomegranates in the hot, dusty fields near Mendota, California for over 20 years. Using a pocketknife, he cuts the pomegranate open and takes a bite, as if it was an apple. "Don't try to eat every seed," he advises.

Indeed, an onlooking farmer says, "you need to get into a bathtub naked when you eat these. They sure stain."

Now there's an idea

ick...I think the skin and the white connective tissues inside a POM are bitter...very bad flavor...seeds too. I just want pure juice.

when I first made Pom jelly i tried to preserve the "clear pulp" from around the pips...but it was a major hassle, not worth the effort, although it did make it slightly jam-like, a better textured jelly. I scraped down the seeds in a fine mesh collander to juice them and then scraped the sides of the collander for the pulp after dumping the seeds. But it quadrupled or more the juicing time.

Am I the only one who eats the seeds?

I eat them like Coffee does, peel like an orange, put the seeds into a bowl.

Pom-blueberry juice + Clearly Canadian blackberry = a wonderful spritzer

They still make Clearly Canadian? We never see it around here anymore.

My parents have a huge pomegranite tree. I had a giant bag full that I just finished up. They WILL stain fabric. Bad. I peel mine and just sit there and pick it out.

Good stuff.

Yum.

Yeah, they don't make a lot of the old flavors anymore. I can only find blackberry & cherry.

Remember the old old bottles? Clear w/the pic of the fruit right on them? I have a big bottle (24oz) of that (blackberry) that I've used as a vase for the last 10-15 years. If it breaks, ever, I will cry. Irreplaceable. It's got fake lilacs in it right now. (Allergic to pollen)

I've washed out a big bottle of the POM Wonderful juice to use for the same purpose. Weird vases are cool.

I'm the only one who swallows the pomegranate seeds????

Do you chew the seeds? They are so hard, I never thought you really could or would want to. How's all that come out on the other end Pffer?........nevermind.

Ps: I love those Pom bottles!

I read on a POM site to cut the fruit into quarters and de-seed in a bowl of water - It works *GREAT*! Then you drain them & you can toss big handfulls in your mouth
