Teen Convicted Of Shooting Girlfriend At Abortion Clinic
Victim Is Now Quadriplegic POSTED: 9:29 am EST November 18, 2004 INDIO, Calif. -- A California teenager has been convicted of attempted murder for shooting his pregnant girlfriend inside a Riverside County abortion clinic. The shooting left the 16 year-old victim a quadriplegic. She testified during the trial that 17-year-old Jeffrey Fitzhenry told her before the shooting that she was "depriving him of his unborn child." The prosecutor told jurors he also threatened, "If you take something of mine, I'll take something of yours." The victim's lawyer said the fetus died within three days of the shooting. He adds that prosecutors didn't seek a murder charge because the girl had decided to have an abortion. The federal Laci Peterson law makes it a separate crime to harm a fetus during an assault on the mother. A sentencing hearing is scheduled in January.
