Tonight, I heard a koala for the first time. It was odd and I didn't know that they make noises so I googled it and got this blog:

On our way back, driving through a desolate wasteland in the middle of the island, we stopped at a koala preserve. It consisted of a long row of eucalyptus trees in which were perched an entire tribe of koalas. My wife stood and burned about eleven rolls of film while fawning over their cutesy-wutesyness, while I stood there and marveled at the fact that these are basically motorized teddy bears on low battery power. They move at the pace of a game of canasta, eating a leaf every once in a while before going back to scratching their asses. I envied the hell out of their lifestyle, as all men should.

I actually learned something at this site, though: I found out that koalas make noise. I had never heard a koala vocalize before, and I just assumed it was related to the sloth somehow and didn't need to verbally communicate because it would be dead before its partner in conversation would get around to answering anyway. But, as it turns out, koalas are fiercely territorial, and will shout threats at intruders ("YOU'VE GOT TEN HOURS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF MY TREE, DAMMIT!!!!").

Now, I didn't expect them to make sounds, and if I ever imagined that they did, I had an image of them making a high-pitched cute noise similar to a baboon or something. But what I actually heard was... well, the only way I can accurately describe the sound is:

Buuuuurrrrrrp.

Yes.

They belched. Loud and long, like a small, furry Aussie Rules Football fan in top drunken form. I expected to see little tiny Foster's bottles in the bushes. It totally shattered my life-long image of the cute little koala bear. Koalas, I discovered with horror, are mannerless little leaf-munching runts. Get out of my tree. Brrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaapppppp.
