Quite often, psychopaths are highly indignant when it is pointed out to them that their dishonest and self-serving actions are damaging to others; in their viewpoint they only did what they had to do in order to fulfill their own needs. They are quick to feel very sorry for themselves but are incapable of genuine pity or empathy toward others or of remorse. Anyone who interferes with this is seen by the psychopath as an obstruction to their purpose.

Psychopaths see other people as nothing but means to their ends or, at most, ancillary characters in their self-starring drama. Some are dangerous (they can even be murderous) when their desires are thwarted, and others are simply so selfish that they have trouble maintaining anything but a surface connection with others, moving on quickly when relationships fall apart.

Psychopaths often establish connections quickly and with ease by being able to evaluate what another person seeks from the relationship and mirroring it; initially this may seem like caring but is really only a way for the psychopath to hook others into meeting his or her needs. They may also snare people into interaction by appealing to others' sense of charity, pity or empathy. They are clever, manipulative and often too shrewd to be caught and may continue to function in this fashion for many years.

But you're not one of those, are you, dear?
Interestingly enough, all of these characteristics apply to someone with a narcissistic personality, which is relatively common. The term "psychopath" is often used to refer to someone with anti-social personality disorder, which is relatively uncommon.

See, you know this stuff. I'm just guessing. Which is why you're a professional person and I am an amateur. As I said, there are a lot of better-versed people who could correct me, because Heaven knows I'm not sure about it all. (Which, I suppose, beats the hell out of proclaiming myself an authority and then arguing with you, especially when you know!) T'anks.

It was some fine guessing. I just wanted to note that as a cluster, these traits are not uncommon. Lotsa narcissistic critters out there. Sometimes I think message boards are magnets to a self-selecting sample.

Edited to add: BTW, malarkey, I really like the avatar joppa.gal made for you.

Indeed. I think a lot of folks who create, write, paint, etc., have more than a dab of self-dramatization/narcissism in them. (As I tearfully shrieked at my kids one particularly bad afternoon when they were small, regarding the next person who acted up going to their room: "And that goes for me too!") The stage just isn't big enough for all of us sometimes.
