Arrow we consider our reputations

i googled "reputation system" and found much discussion and confusion out there surrounding this apparently newish feature of the vBulletin software.

below is one of the better explanations, found on a board for underground music discussion. it may or may not be the same or similar to what we have here and raises more questions than it answers. but one thing is clear - we come back to defining the undefinable: quality

QUOTE FROM "HDD BOARD":

USER REPUTATION - How it works?

people on the boards have been after a way to rank users for quite a while now. We have now activated a user reputation feature, which allows you to give positive reputation to people whose posts you like, and take away reputation from people whose post you don't like.

Here's how it all works:

Adding to someone's reputation or reducing from it is done by click on a button that looks like this in the user's information (on the left side of his or her post):

There are 2 things that every user has from now on - their own reputation, and the reputation power to rate other people.

Your own reputation number tells you how other people on the boards, who have rated you and your posts, feel about you. All new users start with 20 reputation points. Your RANK corresponds to your reputation as follows:

* "HHD Rookie" - less than 100 reputation points
* "HHD Participant" - between 100-200 reputation points
* "HHD Activist" - between 200-300 reputation points
* "HHD Trooper" - between 300-400 reputation points
* "HHD Super Trooper" - between 400-500 reputation points
* "HHD Legend" - between 500-700 reputation points
* "HHD Supreme" between 700-1000 reputation points
* "HHD God" - 1000+ reputation points

You can view your own total reputation points by clicking on the button in any of your own posts!

Notice that your reputation can also go to negative numbers if all you do is spam and abuse the boards. Negative ranks have their own titles, which won't be revealed here just yet.

Your reputation power, on the other hand, tells you how much reputation you can give and take from other users. It's dependent on the following factors:

* Join date - The longer you have been a member for, the more reputation power you have. You get +1 point of reputation power for every 90 days that you have been a member.
* Post count - The more you post, the more reputation power you gain. You get +1 point of reputation power for every 200 posts that you make.
* Reputation points - The more reputation other users give you, the more reputation power you have. You get +1 point of reputation power for 100 reputation points that you receive from other people.

Let's take an example to make this all clear:

User A has been a member for 9 months, and has made 250 posts. Other users of the boards have given him 110 points of reputation over the time for making good quality posts. How much reputation power does user A now have?

He or she has 3 points for being a member for 9 months, 1 for making over 200 posts, and 1 for his or her own reputation level. User A's reputation power is 5 points total in this case. What does this mean in practice? If user A sees a post that he/she likes a lot, he/she can add to the reputation level of the poster. If he/she does this, the original poster's reputation grows by 5 points. If user A disagrees with the poster and wants to take away from his reputation, doing this reduces the poster's reputation by 5 points.

The purpose of this feature is to have a way to rank posts and users that is not solely dependent on the post count. With this setup, people who are new to the boards have to work their way up and earn respect from the community. If people generally like what new users posts, their reputation will slowly go up and they will start gathering more reputation power themselves.

Please do not abuse this system. Thank you.

END OF QUOTE
