Post we ponder the tsunami aftermath

why should one of the most devastating tragedies in human history stop them from getting a tan?

but then again maybe they're all relief-team workers having a well-earned break - does that make it okay?

you decide

The airlines and resorts should in conjuntion with the people that booked trips to these places in advance before the devistation should cancel all thouse reservations and donate that money to releif. I can not imagine why anyone would want to visit those areas now for any other reason than helping out.

agreed with all the above.

however...

slipping into devil's advocate leotard...

many of those places heavily depend on tourism to provide revenue. to have money come through the industries that are already in place, it shortens the amount of time of dependence upon international aid. Thailand specifically went out of it's way to clean the beaches where the tourists go to keep people from canceling their expensive holidays. They are keenly aware from fighting SARS and Bird Flu what bad press can do to their number one industry.

so, here's what folks should do- buy that plane ticket, perferablly on Thai Air, SriLankanAir, or Air India. Book your hotel. Go ahead and splurg on that suite! And then, at the very last minute, cancel everything. Make sure you pay full price for all the amenities that you would incrue as if you actually went.

Be sure to find some random restaurants, souvenir stalls, and pickpockets and send them some money too.

I like the last one best. I keep making imaginary retorts for the woman.

I saw a story on this during the morning news today. I find it in very poor taste. Sure the area depends on tourism but from a vacationers perspective how the hell could a person relax knowing that there are probably several dozen corpses under the rubish pile behind him. I don't know about anyone else but it would just turn my stomach. If, by some freak chance, I ended up there on vacation I would join the aid workers and help them. Damn my conscience.
