anybody have any ideas on how to trace it?

is there any way to ping or finger or something to see if a particular computer with a particular serial number is being used online?

If you still have the original box (or original sales invoice) it has an ID or "service tag" number. That is the number you use to make your theft report with. If truth be told though. . . . if the "person" who absconded with your laptop never takes it in to service center, it will never be traced. Sorry Mr. Bales

If you have an internet connection card in there with your account information the company that provided you with the internet connection should be able to trace it. In my country you can even get the Police to help with the trace, don't know about the rest of the world? If it's got very important information you don't want to lose you should try the police and account provider; if not just collect the insurance on it.
When you insure something make sure you write down the S# when you purchase it, its the manufacturer's ID code and makes your product unique. Keep it in a place which is not attached to the product. The S# is usually on the back of the labtop, called: S# or Serial #. If your labtop is ever found in the future the Police will connect it to your report and S#.

marcus, im sorry someone stole your laptop! just last week i had someone steal my wallet straight out of my purse. it's very irritating when something is stolen from you....
