YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!
Just got my computer online I owe MisterCleverTrousers big time for staying up late and trying to deal with my PC ("Well, if I had known you were going to bring one of THOSE into my home..." diehard Mac lover ) We kept getting a connection but couldn't view any browsers - very annoying... What worked was downloading and running WinsockFix (backed up the registry first) and then setting my Internet Options to detect the LAN connection automatically. Whew. (I have promised that my next computer will be a Powerbook or G5 or something of that nature... )It is so beautiful here. Lots of hills! lots of candy-pastel Victorian homes on the hills, all practically smack up against each other, in rows of overlapping streets... lots of streets going one way - even more than L. A.! and wires running above the streets in all directions crazy-like for the trolleys. You drive right *on* the tracks - I guess the trollies can stop & go, like buses, so if you happen to be in their way you won't cause an accident Often, all of a sudden, there will be a sort of concrete divider thing dividing the side of the street you're on - it's kind of confusing/nervewracking, tho' I'm sure I'll get used to it soon & see a logic... Some reckless drivers, but it seems like there are more polite ones here than in L. A. (i.e., people that honor a turn signal as a request to change lanes as opposed to an invitation to a game of "chicken" ...)Yesterday I took R to the Amtrak station - the train was FIVE HOURS LATE! but it was good to have more time, and there are TONS of things to do. The station is new, and built right by Jack London Square (in Oakland), where there are some gorgeous statue/fountains and some nice restaurants and stores. Also a zoo that we didn't go to in case we got too distracted by the monkeys and missed the train. We stopped by a restaurant that I think was called the Oakland Cafe (it's on 3rd and... ummm.... not Jackson - a couple streets over) and had a luscious cup of clam chowder that was so good I brought some home. They claim to have the world's best burgers - I saw a construction worker-looking guy having one and I have to say it looked pretty damned impressive so I'm gonna go back & check it out. moooooooooooooGetting to sleep was very hard. Bed comfortable but too empty/cold. I need limbs to run into and it turns out that I miss having the blankets stolen Smarty & me have plans to cook together later I made banana bread for breakfast in his beautiful kitchen... He has a DISHWASHER!!! ![]()
