it's raining
Thank goodness for that.
Bushfire near city contained June 08, 2005 From: AAP A BUSHFIRE in the Adelaide Hills has been contained after destroying one shed and an area of scrub. The Country Fire Service (CFS) said the blaze was brought under control mid-afternoon after burning in an area around the town of Mylor. The fire posed a threat to several homes at one stage but CFS crews managed to save all property except one shed. Rain began falling in the Adelaide Hills this afternoon, helping the efforts of about 100 fire fighters. The CFS said the Mylor fire was one of about 15 that got out of control today as a result of burn-off operations. ^^ This lot are like the Keystone Firemen.

Unfortunate fact of life here too. Which is not to say that I either like them or show them no respect. I came home from school on the bus on the first day of the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires. There was an enormous duststorm that day and it was 43C.
"I was working in a factory when I heard about the fires. I could smell smoke and when I looked out the window the light seemed to have changed. The sky was brownish red and I knew it was a bushfire that had created a dust storm. It was 43 degrees celsius that day. Some of the women in the factory started to scream. They hadn't been in Australia very long and had never seen anything like this before. They thought the world was going to end. The boss let us go home early because the heat was unbearable. I had to walk in that heat and you could have fried an egg off the bricks of the building." As we cleared the dust, I remember the bus driver saying "we can't go any further, the roads are closed". The family home was in an ordinary suburb albeit reasonably close to bushland - but roads closed? Then we realised we could see for the first time that day, the horseshoe of hills that surrounds Adelaide on three sides and it looked pretty much like this: ![]() only on a bigger scale. My friend and I ran home as smoke rolled down the road and the police were driving around in cars with loud hailers telling every-one to leave. I don't think I really got it until I saw some-one loading a budgie in a cage into the car. End of the story is that we and our houses were saved but 75 people weren't so lucky, including 12 firefighters: ![]() Ergo I get just that little bit edgy when I hear the siren go now.
