CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles off the coast of northern California, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

all I know is my phone started ringing off the hook with people asking if I felt the earthquake and I was like "dude...that was so 2 days ago!!"

I think people might just be a little tsunami crazy...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - U.S. officials briefly issued a tsunami warning on Tuesday night following a major earthquake off the northern California coast before saying the immediate danger had passed.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

A major 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit at 7:50 p.m. local time (0250 GMT on Wednesday) 91 miles west of Crescent City, California, a rugged coastal community hit by a deadly tsunami in 1964.

Emergency officials initially issued a warning that a tsunami could hit anywhere from California up to Canada, but then lifted that warning.

"The risk of a tsunami hitting at this point is gone," said California Emergency Services spokesman Eric Lamoureux

it was a non-event . . . but because the last time this occurred in the Crescent City area (last night's epicenter) in 1964, there was a tsunami. A friend, who lives behind the OC, left me a voicemail msg last night chuckling to himself that he just saw a tsunami warning on the tv news for his area as well.
