I want to get a dog
I want to get a dog. I have decided a big dog won't work. I want a smaller breed.
I have three cats, so, I am going to have to find a breed that gets along well with other animals. At first, I thought about getting a Jack Russel Terrier. I read about them, and it sounded like they will attack and kill other pets, so that is out. I love Beagles, but, they tend to be highly energetic, and would harass the cats as well. I have more or less settled on getting a Daisy dog. They are a little expensive though. So, in your experience, what breed works well with cats? Should I go with a puppy or an adult dog? I would have time to work with a puppy, and I think that the cats would not be intimidated by a puppy. But, a fully house broken dog would be easier to deal with. Let me know. Thanks. Funny you should ask. My sister got a cross breed Jack Russell Terrier/ Beagle puppy from a friend who forgot on her wedding day that her female dog was in heat and let her out before she went to her wedding. Hence, Posey. My sister has one cat, my mom who lives with her has two cats. They get along fine. I'd go with a puppy so you can train it. Older dogs can carry baggage from previous homes. I adopted a 2 year old stray - love her but wished I could have had her as a puppy. Good luck!

It's a mongrel!! Cute. But still have to scoop poop. Dogs are bad like that. And while we are on the topic of dogs. Dog got hit by a car. Car was doing about 50kph. Car has a cracked bumper. Dog turned around, barked at the car and ran off. Dog is fine. Not dead. Barely bruised. FFS what do I have to do to get rid of it?! eta Brickbats to the first person to say "60 kph" etc etc

In my experience, the smaller the dog the less well it gets along with cats, and vice versa.
Cats don't understand dogs their size. It freaks them out. They're like, "WTF ARE you, man?!?!?" But when it comes to big dogs, they're all like, "Hey, dude, you're a dog, I'm a cat, you're bigger, I have sharper claws, we're cool." Case in point: My cat loves my mom's German Shepherd, but absolutely hates my boyfriend's miniature pinscher, even though both dogs treat it the same. That said, as long as the puppy is very young when it's introduced to the cat, and they're well socialized with each other, I don't think it will matter what breed of dog you get. I think it's more about the cat's attitude than the puppy's. |

My best friend has a Maine Coon cat and two Golden Retrievers, all in the house.
The three of them do fine together. Each of the dogs was introduced to the cat as a puppy. The cat was able to slap them around a little when the dogs were tiny and manageable from a cat's viewpoint, and instilled the fear of god in them, and now they leave the cat alone. Not to mention that if you've got a puppy, you can leave the two of them to their own devices and know that they really can't hurt each other too much. A puppy just doesn't have that instinct. As opposed to introducing a cat to a full-grown small dog, because even though they're about the same size, a small dog could kill a cat pretty easily. *** I will stop spamming the board now. ![]() Last edited by Gatsby : 03-15-2006 at 11:46 AM. |

I dog sat for a friend of mine last week while she and her family went on spring break. He is really cute, but an english bulldog. What a mess. Slobber, drool, slobber. I had to pick up his crap. It was in my yard, but I still didn't want poop all over. I think I have changed my mind about wanting a dog.....

Except when it's your own dog a poopin', it doesn't seem so offensive. Don't get a drooling, slobbering type dog. Maybe you are making the right choice to not get a dog right now. They require a lot of work, time and patience. Sort of like kids!!

baby skunks, rabbits, raccoons
But at what age is it cool to kill them? Your dog will want to know, surely.

My dog kills bunnies every year & every year my poor mother has my stepfather deal with the carcasses. Also you need to protect your dog from these animals, who may or may not be rabid, may or may not have fleas. If you get a dog, please pick one from the pound. You can get a nice pet there. They are mostly big dog breeds, mostly 3 years & older.
