What ever happened to Y2K?

I mean, the whole world held it's breath. Then, when nothing happened, no one seemed to find it odd.

It was like we were all embarrassed at how gullible we all were, and collectively decided never to speak it's name again...

are you referring to the Y2K bug, or the world coming to an end, or are you just drunk?

in terms of the general populace i don't think the majority of people were seriously hunkering down in bomb shelters, waiting for WW3 to break out. i just think there was a healthy respect for the chaotic tendency of humanity and it's never unlikely that any significant event might herald an outbreak of violence. i expected a few riots scattered about the globe. but i didn't think it was odd, per se, when it didn't happen.

the people that i REALLY wonder about are the relgious nutjobs who knew for a fact that 2k would mark the beginning of the apocalypse and the return of jesus. they held rapture parties, for chrissake! where are these people now, explaining how they could have been SO SURE but SO WRONG?

even if that's not the case, technically the millennium didn't START until 2001. so even if the calendar were accurate, they were still a year early for panic.

it had to do with a programming bug- the year of a date was represented by the last 2 digits, instead of 4 digits. Apparently, some things did go askew on Y2K, but all the SNAFUs were caught.

Yup, there were a lot of older computer applications that were still using 2 digits for the year. All had to be modified for 4 digits, or logic coded that determined the century based on some algorithm. Some programmers (ahem) made a LOT of money in the couple of years preceding 2000.
