September 11 and who I will remember/call
Well first of all, I will remember my grandfather. He did not die on the day of the attacks, he died a few years earlier on September 11. My brother always remarked it was strange that he died on 911.
I will call my friend Tom. He was in the Pentagon when they plane hit. He was on the same side of the building that the plane hit. He remembers advising his commander that both of the twin towers had been hit and was watching television, and surfing the net to see what had happened, when he was knocked out of his chair, and glass fell down on him. He made it out, but many were instantly killed, and he felt guilty about making it out alive. And to be truthful, we were a little more than friends. About two years before the attack, we were casually dating (I lived in VA next to the Pentagon, but, it was a detail, and I moved back to Michigan). I went to visit him after the attack and he drove me by the damaged Pentagon. I spent the weekend with him, and during the first night I was there he woke me up screaming, asking me why I was there. The next day, when I asked him about it, he did not remember a thing. I think he had post traumatic stress disorder, but I did not push it. I will still give him a call and hope that he has recovered. We talk every year on September 11. |
