Talk:Fabuloso Friday/FIFA World Cup 2006

The world cup article was edited by someone to "what everyone except americans call football". I changed it back to an american view that I find more in tune with the Show... If you are heavily offended comment here!

Despite the bias of the line "what Europeans think is Football" is hilarous and I think more in character. Ze likes to make fun of Europe (even if he doesn't really mean it) --AaronStJ 19:45, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
Who is the hard charger that changes this text to "except americans". This is only fun if we make fun of Europe, it's called irony, god damn it! Also, the longer formulation "the world cup for the sport" even if more correct, I feel is less effective. But I don't feel as strongly about that, but don't go editing this to "everyone except americans" without giving a good reason here!! --Gelbi 05:56, 7 June 2006 (PDT)
I changed it; I beleive it was originally 'except americans' then a hard-charger changed it, and i reverted it since there was discussion about the other version. Sorry if I misread things.. any comment on the 'Americans don't call it anything, because it sucks' gag?
How it reads now, "The World Cup of what Europeans think is Football," doesn't address two key issues: "What is a World Cup" and "What is Football." Neither is a difficult question, but spoken quickly, that line is likely to leave some viewers in the dust. Especially Americans who don't pay much attention to a sport that we don't dominate. By saying "The World Cup for the sport Europeans think is Football," not only identifies Football as s sport, but forces the viewer to associate "World Cup" with sports, thus making the synapses required to make this joke funny more likely to be fired. by Rocco
Thanks for the explanation, I think you are right, considering Ze's speed, you are even more right! --Gelbi 07:19, 7 June 2006 (PDT)
As it stands now ("the World Cup for the sport everyone except Americans call 'Football'") is perfect. It's called the World Cup because everywhere except America this is what the world calls 'football'. Turning it into a joke on Europeans only, robs it of its wit. Mr malaise 03:02, 8 June 2006 (PDT)
No, making fun of Americans is not funny. It's too easy. Making fun of everyone else for calling a sport by its original name IS funny because it's ironic. Please don't change it back. by Rocco
Any intelligent viewer will expect the "Ball Handling" joke, and I think it's funnier if Ze simply laughs at his clever innuendo than actually repeating it again. by Rocco
This is also right of course, great job! --Gelbi 07:19, 7 June 2006 (PDT)
I like the "making fun of Europe" version. It's way funnier than the other way around.--Scooby Poop 10:37, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

It's Shocking that the whole world is interested in such an event as the World Cup, that it seems to bore so much this Audience. --Yozef June 8, 5:10 ET
Yozef, don't you get the joke? We're all over-educated tech-nerds playing at being American xenophobes. Its part of the Ze-mask, in fact, as with his mockery of the French and English on earlier shows. We all agree with you, in real life, and some of us are even watching the Cup games, but here, we're all from imaginary Alabama, where footballs are shaped like this ----> <=> Get it? Hokie
 :) Yozef

Is this section really necessary? Less sports, more comedy, I say.

If The Show needs comment on current events on Fabuloso Friday then I think it should stay. Unless something much funnier comes along.

I like the "Coal is dirty" line at the end. But it's possible you wouldn't get it without seeing it written, and it might just come over as a slur on Ashley Cole. Makes me wonder whether there's a pun with "cole/coal" and "minor/miner" trying to get out. Maybe the line "Coal is dirty" over a picture of a coal miner. Or a coal miner knocking on a door with the subtitle "Miner knocks".Mr malaise 03:11, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

Guh, football (soccer) isn't vital enough to be commented upon. Perhaps, in the future, when there is something worthy mentioned in the Media...? --CeruleanNinja
Oh, I think you guys will notice it (the US is also competing) even if today CNN is mainly concerned with Ronaldo's girlfriend not posing nude; the World Cup is BIG and will be noticed even in the US. --Gelbi 05:56, 7 June 2006 (PDT)
The world cup is absolutely huge in everywhere apart from the US. Since Ze is a keen traveller I think it should definately go in. It only happens every 4 yrs. The script for this bit is great also.
The football segment's lines about "ball handling" are awesome. I don't think the section should be cut. It's juvenile, sure, but it's hilarious.--Scooby Poop 10:37, 8 June 2006 (PDT)
Agreed. I like this section. It's the only really solid section in here, actually. --Rocco 12:55, 8 June 2006
Completely agreed. Solid, amusing, and no less self-demeaning than anything else Ze says about Europe and seems to share his voice pretty well. So, problem? --Thenomain 15:58, 8 June, Etc.
Oh Well... Maybe we should stick to slapstick comedians and the likes of Tom Green going really out of his way to be loved.--Yozef June 8, 5:10 ET
