So what do we do? show me some american democracy at work!

Douchebag proposal, all the way. -scooby

I dumped most of the 'douche' references and steered the opening into a French direction, i.e. 'Deja Vu' etc. Could you please re-add that version (along with the Alternative Version), for people to judge it with the new changes in place? Thankees. --CeruleanNinja
Right now I'm digging the 'Douchebaggery Aside' version. References the controversial bag, but gets rid of the bad stuff and reframes it in a funny way.

Official Douchebag Retraction

I began the whole douchebag process as a way to replace the phrase "I am a huge poopie-head." (Yes really. Check the early history.) In my mind, I had thought that the whole shower-douchebag connection was a story that my girlfriend had told me a few days before, but upon checking the Europe episodes I realize now that Ze had already expounded upon it and my brain filed it incorrectly.

That's the extent to which Ze has infiltrated my subconscious. Pathetic, I know, but more pathetic is the current script. Abandon all douchebag references, ye who enter here; and write a new opening because the alternate opening is not funny at all.

The text to follow is not funny. Get rid of it

To my great chagrin (i just said that to use the word chagrin) this was posted on the main page. My opinion is that A) Ze did not seem to think it was lame B) Once you put it on the wiki, it's no longer JUST your idea that you can retract! Other people may like it! Please don't be hard-charging away stuff like that... --Gelbi 13:58, 7 June 2006 (PDT)

Seconded. Let it be, let other Fabulosos have a go at improving it.

Bring back the douche

I really liked the original douchebag intro where Ze calls himself a douche. I know he seemd kinda down on it in today's show, but wer're writing it not Ze. I'm gonna dig it back up and post it here. --AaronStJ 14:01, 7 June 2006 (PDT)

He seemed like "is that the best you guys can do?", but I don't think it's embarrassingly lame and pathetic. --Gelbi 14:16, 7 June 2006 (PDT)

I think the fact that Ze gave it such a specific highlight today was proof it needs total overhauling. It wasn't subtle like "kick it up a notch." He felt compelled to insult democracy because of it.

I dunno, I get the idea he thinks the whole thing is stupid (one wonders why he came up with it in the first place). I think this intro or something like it is important. It sets up the fact that yes, we're aware we can make the show totally lame/insulting. But than makes it clear that that's not our intention (it's not, right?). After that, we can get on with a fairly normal show. We hit the audience over the head with the fact that it's user written and Ze is our slave right away, and from then on the we're subtle about it. And kind of the whole idea is to make something Ze doesn't really want to do anyway. So it looks like we're winning. --AaronStJ 14:33, 7 June 2006 (PDT)

The reason he came up with this show is because the comments are so crazily skewed. He's doing this to get an idea of what it is his audience is really like. BTW, what was that old saying about absolute power again?

I liked the early version of this where ze brings up that we COULD make him say "I am a douchebag," then makes a reference like "but you guys wouldn't do that" and then goes on to a quick 4 or 5 times of saying it. It's like we broke the trust right away. Beyond that, I think it could go right to "Are the new viewer's gone yet?" because the whole "what does douche mean" string of gags has basically been done already during ze's European tour. I'd like to get to the "burning asylum" line more quickly, since that part of the script seems relatively strong.--Bobbie mac 21:50, 7 June 2006 (EST)

  • I second Bobbie Mac's motion

I say bring it back -- go with the predictable option all the way at the opening, then drop it for the rest of the script, with one possible late reference. Hokie

That was the idea, to get the 'obvious' out of the way, in as over-the-top a way as possible. R

Yeah, the whole point of the douchebag thing is lost on some people. I say keep the original douchebag version because the camera cuts are good and the emphasis on diff words in the sentence "I AM a huge douchebag", well, just keep it.--Scooby Poop 10:37, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

I like the Douche-lite version the best.Yves

Yeeeeeeeey! Well, hey how about we combine the two versions, i.e. Douchebag x 5 at the beginning but go into the Deja Vu angle later on, so as not to repeat elements of official shows too much? --CeruleanNinja

Drop the douche

It's just seems too obvious to make Ze insult himself over and over. It's a one liner perhaps, not a routine. We can make anything happen, I'm sure there's something more interesting to go for than the most predictable option.

Go Thumbelina! Boo open-source geekery!

Of all the opener proposals, Thumbelina was the only one to make me laugh out loud. Largely because it was so unexpected. The Show works because, even with all the in-jokery, you never know where Ze might take it next. (I'm secretly kinda dreading watching The Show on Friday cos it'll be so familiar.)

Anyhoo, the current open-source opener seems a bit computer nerdy to be universally appealing. The douchebag stuff is just lame and old.

Too computer nerdy? This is a wiki! And I thought objections to the ZeFrank Law version would all come from the reference to eating our own shit!
Yes, a wiki this is. But not all The Show viewers are here. Nor are they all geeks. Eating shit is fine for humor, open source software isn't. Mr malaise 10:09, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

Even if no one else votes for something as surprising as Thumbelina, can we at least have the line "Have the old viewers stopped fucking with the script yet?" Mr malaise 03:48, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

My Democracy version is an attempt to go somewhere new while keeping a partial reference to the whole douchebag fiasco. Mr malaise 10:09, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

Improving the original douchebag version

I think this will be voted, but there are some things I'd like to improve with it... are the candidates closed for editing???? Well, anyway, let's comment some improvements here.

I actually cheated and already hard edited in an "Awesome" cut, I think it won't harm anyone. It should be just as enthusiastic as the Wednesday's awesome was sarcastic. But my main concern is with the where it does the same douche joke as Ze has already has done... my suggestion is to go "in french douch means to shower" and then instead of expanding on that... go to a very New viewer gone yet style language lesson using more false friends from this list. So he would continue, in quite mather of fact manner, with stuff like in swedish a fuck is a closet, and so on... maybe... --Gelbi 13:42, 8 June 2006 (PDT)

  • In Sweden a fuck is something you have in your office. (it means deposit box).
  • While in Germany fucks just run around in the forest (it means fox).
  • In grece a they set up fuckers to catch pussy (it means mousetrap), oops I got it wrong, maybe it can be done...
  • In Holland a faggot is something you blow in. (it's a bassoon).

You get the point...
