c6
still frees up a line for the Queen, but gives us slightly better pawn development.
- Someone in Move5 pointed out that this keeps us from doing Nc6 in a pinch. I have to admit that I agree with their evaluation that this is a bad thing (tm) medwardstalk
- well we still have Nd7 and Na6 if we need to get the knight out of there.208.60.177.45
- Those are pretty lousy places to put the knight. arcblah
- It's mostly about making sure you can get the knight out to support the bishop in a pinch. The comment against this was that putting knights on the side of the board severely hampers their mobility. medwardstalk
- This move is faulty because it's cutting off our light-squared bishop completely (until some pawns are exchanged) and it restricts Nc6 to either develop our knight and/or protect our forward bishop. ßrigaderant

Nc6
Nb6 by 66.47.159.86 (aka Mike): I know nothing about playing chess professionally. This just occurred to me, and it would help us out with ze's pawn buildup. Feel free to shoot this down at will.
- Nb6 isn't possible...do you mean Nc6?
- I think this clusterfucks the queenside development and thus helps him more than us.
- For those beginning chess players who are unfamiliar with the technical chess term "clusterfuck", the main reason why this move is bad is that our queen's bishop is trapped. -- Pseudonym 16:36, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- I agree... Ick --Salamander 12:40, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- I'm divided between f5, Nc6, and Bd7 .. yes it restricts us, but it helps protect our bishop, advances another knight to the field (albeit with limited mobility) and opens up the prospect for a queenside castle. However, i think either Bd7 or f5 would be better, and leave Nc6 until later if it is needed. I'm still not sold on any of the three moves I like yet .. but we're in no rush. ßrigaderant
- I did mean Nc6, apologies. All good points here. It helps us with those pawns, but it doesn't do much of anything else. Was an idea, anyway. - Mike
- I like this move because it supports the possibility of a later ... e5 which would free up the white bishop. -- Jeff
Bd7
- Another prospect .. safe, developing a bishop (which has lousy mobility) but paving the way for a queenside castle. However, it prevents our queen from recapturing cxd5 (although our e5 pawn still covers here, and I think c5 is much more likely than cxd5) ßrigaderant
- one of the nice tings about this move is it prevents Qa4+ forking the bishop as well
- not really. our knight can protects our bishop and king at the moment so Bd7 doesn't really help us out there Geedubber 16:15, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
- what are the downsides to this move? Geedubber 01:53, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
- This move brings out the bishop but limits the queen. But why bring out the bishop? While developing more pieces is a good idea in principle, I don't think it is when it doesn't give us an advantage in the short term plus blocks the Queen. Towlineeh
Ba5
Is it better to retreat the bishop now rather than have it involved in forced exchanges? medwardstalk
It still means we are giving away the knight. AnonHCtalk

7. Nxe4 Pxe4 right? Not sure I like that either. Lets evaluate supporting the knight...medwardstalk - Bish moves back, Queen puts us in czech, we take queen with knight. Bish moves back, .. ... I forgot the pin. Nice. This move is looking better. AnonHCtalk
- 6. .. Ba5 7. Qa4+ (forking King and Bishop) .. we lose the bishop. This move doesn't work. ßrigaderant
- Nc6 would break the check and defend the bishop, so it's not a total loss. But I agree that this isn't the best maneuver. --128.61.49.42 17:20, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- pawn to c6 would also break the check and defend the bishop with the queen. just a thought
- See the c6 discussion above that points out how it's not-so-good. I'm still interested in hearing ßrigade'srant analysis of what a post 7. Qa4+ Nc6 game looks like. medwardstalk
- I've got a few different lines floating around already .. what's the move 6 lines that you want me to work up and I can stick them either in the move summaries or the article page. Bear in mind that 7. Qa4+ looks to be a blunder on Ze's part (I have a feeling he'll push to c5 and/or move out Bb2 or Bb3 before bringing out his queen .. he could have moved Qa4 this last move, but chose Qc2 instead, which is a better move, and defensive .. Ze knows what he's doing) ßrigaderant

Qf6
- Sets up a potential future attack at f2, where his board seems weakest and our knight is already covering. Also allows for Qf3 next turn, which attacks his currently unprotected queen while ours is covered by our pawn (I presume as we've opened agreesively, a straight up queen for queen trade is to our advantage). 84.9.49.188 06:40, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
Arrogant request
Fabulosos, there is a tendency of moves going the way ßrigade is pushing. While he is a very good chess player, he too can make a serious mistake and it is a bit disturbing that so few people challange him. I'm going away for a few weeks now and I wish all of you the best of luck! Yes, it's good to listen to what experts like ßrigade has said, but please vote as late as possible after reading what other people have said as well. --gelbitalk 06:45, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- 'going away?' to somewhere they don't have computers?! (sniff)
- Yes, something like a two week vacation, without my laptop :O --gelbitalk 07:15, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- gelbi has proposed an idea that voting only be allowed between 9pm and midnight of the day of the voting. The point would be to allow ideas to be fleshed out before bandwagon hopping commences. I believe this should be seriously considered:debate here - arcblah
- Let's try it tonight and see how things go. If you absolutely have to vote earlier, leave your vote on the ARTICLE page, and we can see how many would be affected, otherwise, I suggest opening the vote at 8pm ET, 5pm PT.
- AFTERTHOUGHT ITS FRIDAY! No show Saturday or Sunday! So now we really don't need to worry about it. Let's just open the voting Sunday at Noon ET!
- Actually in the interest of fairness we should probably make it Saturday midnight. That way both sides get the same amount of time to think about moves over the weekend. Plus it'll keep the debate focused here. muyfabulosotalk 12:11, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- Yeah, we can decide not to implement it today. I think maybe next monday we should go forward with it, IF that is the general consensus.
Pxc4 - The Terrible Move
Honestly, I think this is a terrible approach as the pawn is left unsupported. But I could be wrong. medwardstalk
