Magic Dumpster:Fabuloso Friday 2/Fabuloso Chess/Zes Consolation Prize
From zefrank
Ze's Consolation Prize
Kingpatzer has started a new pledge to raise enough money to buy Ze a 'booby prize.' (I guess it's more of a 'sugartits' prize, we being who we are).
Chess for Dummies
Chess Poster
- Maybe something for his apartment, like alarge Chess poster? bobby_macrap at me
- He's not in college anymore. :) - arc
'Gay' Chess Tee
- Something he'll like that's gay...a chess t-shirt.bobby_macrap at me:i have no life.

Wishlist book
- One that doesn't rub the game in...one of the less expensive books from his list?bobby_macrap at me
- I agree. I don't want it to seem like we are rubbing it in his face with a prize that remindes him that he lost. I want to get him something to show that we had fun. I think one of the other books would do just fine. Jes ter23 13:04, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
- I find this very interesting:
- Risk & Reason + Laws of Fear = $47.98 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0521016258/ref=pd_bxgy_text_b/002-0108958-8596050?ie=UTF8

- VOTE by Kingpatzer 10:19, 18 August 2006 (PDT) : I like this one best
- VOTE by SaintPeter 13:33, 18 August 2006 (PDT) : I'm pro-book. I don't like the 'jokey' type gift, even if we did win. Seems like poor 'chessmanship'.
Chess Set
- How about a nice chess set? The one he had on the show was $5.00 Target style. Maybe glass, wood or stone. Jes ter23 13:11, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
- My vote for this, if we can afford a good one. Argonbeam3500
- Good chess sets tend to cost more than I feel a consolation prize would cost. Maybe a travel one? As a bonus it wouldn't take up much room, which I assume is at a premium at his place in nyc. arc

- There are some reasonable ones on Amazon...including this travel set with funky 'art deco?' pieces. [1] bobby_macrap at me
- I like this idea. Should we set up a vote? PTWhipplebangSR! 14:35, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
- Here's a decent set that I bought for my g/f a few weeks ago .. and there's a discount for USCF members (I think mine's still valid, but there should be at least a few of us around) .. Link .. ßrigaderant 02:58, 17 August 2006 (PDT)
- Why not a shot glass checkers set instead; it's both fun and insulting! It allows him to drown his sorrows while at the same time suggesting that he shouldn't play chess anymore.
- VOTE by bobby_macrap at me 07:55, 18 August 2006 (PDT):It's cheap, but I like the funky chessboard. It looks like something ze could use to reenact the subtext from an Arthur Miller play.

Collaborated Fabuloso Shirt
- I think if we made up a custom fabuloso logo and slapped it on a t-shirt that'd be a great gift. arc
- (suggested text moved here.)
- I agree. Pooling money and buying a gift doesn't match up with Ze's "interactive group projects" theme. I challenge the group to design a T-shirt (something he'd wear to thanksgiving dinner without being slapped by Aunt Mildred). Once designed, I will go out, buy a blank shirt (probably at Value Village), print the design on leftover transfer paper (so keep it reasonable), and snail mail it to him. -- Somejeff 15:09, 16 August 2006 (PDT)
- Transfer paper comes off easily. Get the shirt through Zazzle (or CafePress) to ensure the best quality possible. --72.228.127.101 10:25, 18 August 2006 (PDT)
- I definitely like the idea of this, if not the slogans (I) proposed thus far. The rest of the gifts are fine and all, but we'd be extending the fabuloso project automatically to create another collaborative effort. Sure, maybe that's too much work for a consolation prize, and maybe we really aren't very funny, but still. Art + Slogan, should be a good time. arc

Chess Piece Shirt
- I found a chess 'knight' shirt on Amazon (I'm liking Amazon because Ze already has an identity there and it would be easy to send something to his address through Amazon without needing to find out what his address is.)bobby_macrap at me
Something Engraved
- This could be in addition to whatever else we get him but I think it would be cool to give him something that had a personal message engraved from us. Something he can look back on and feel nostalgic about, like "Ze, thanks for a great show. Love, The Fabulosos". He who says zonk 20:35, 17 August 2006 (PDT)
- I really like this idea. The only problem I can see with it, is that for most items, we will have to have it ingraved by a third party. That means that we will have to ship the item to a Fabuloso who knows where to get it engraved, then ship it to Ze. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for this though. Should we wait to vote on this untill a consolation prize is chosen? It would be a little silly to vote "Yes" if we get him a shirt. Jes ter23 20:52, 17 August 2006 (PDT)
- "Things remembered" has all sorts of silly shit. You can order online too. Arc

PLEDGE
- US $10.00 - But only to buy a consolation prize when we win. I never thought we'd lose :) Kingpatzer 18:00, 3 August 2006 (PDT)
- US $1.00 - I think I mentioned I was a cheap bastard, but the truth is I'd just feel silly paying the same as if I'd lost. bobby_macrap at me 21:01, 3 August 2006 (PDT)
- US $2.50 - I'm with Bobby on this one. It doesn't seem quite right if I end up paying the same amount as if we lost. PTWhipplebang 15:11, 4 August 2006 (PDT)
- US $10.00 - I certainly feel like I got my money's worth of fun on this. Ze deserves some love. Snark 15:48, 4 August 2006 (PDT)
- US $5.00 - It's what I was in for if we lost, so I'm good for it if we lose, too. This has been really entertaining and I've learned a LOT about chess. Gotta dust off my board. Win or lose, I'm almost as excited to tune in to see Ze's move as to see 'The Show'. SaintPeter 20:00, 4 August 2006 (PDT)

- US $5.00 - The game rekindled my interest in chess and it was a great experience. I've enjoyed the show and the game, it feels right to show some appreciation. He who says zonk 23:44, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
- US $5.00 - What happened to my earlier pledge? Here it is again. --Sford 10:21, 16 August 2006 (PDT)
TOTAL: US $ 59.00
How we get it to him?
Option 1) Send our pledge amount to Ze's Paypal account?
We could instruct him what to buy once he has the money.
Option 2) Send our pledge to one Fabuloso?
This has the benefit of surprise (assuming he's not reading this part of the wiki). If the gift is from Amazon, we can ship it to directly to his address without the hassle of finding out what his address is.
- VOTE by Graymon 13:05, 15 August 2006 (PDT) : I think it should be bobby_macrap at him if it's OK with him. It's OK with me, but I'd want everyone to be comfortable with that.bobby_macrap at me
- VOTE by Kingpatzer 06:16, 16 August 2006 (PDT) : i'm cool with that. how do we send it to him? If we go this way, I suggest we set up a time limit (say by Friday next week) to collect the money via Paypal or payment mailed to the Fabuloso who will handle the money. That person would agree to spend the collection as soon and as completely as possible on the winning gifts and work out with Ze via email how to ship them.bobby_macrap at me
- VOTE by SaintPeter 09:43, 16 August 2006 (PDT) : I don't have a problem with using Paypal to send the dough.
- VOTE by Sford 10:23, 16 August 2006 (PDT) : Bobbie's fine wit me.
- VOTE by bobby_macrap at me: whether it's me or another fabuloso, I think this is the best way. I'm happy to handle this if you folks are comfortable with that. I've posted my email (the same one I use as my Paypal address) in my Usertalk. Click the 'rap at me' to go there.
Option 3 Fundable Pledge Drive)
You can use this website... http://www.fundable.org/
VOTE by bobby_macrap at me 08:01, 18 August 2006 (PDT): If this one wins, I'll set up the group tomorrow and post the link to the wiki. after trying to set up the group for this, I realize it's not as compatible with what we're doing as I thought (minimum pledges of $10 and total goals of $500 are a bit steeper than what we're doing).bobby_macrap at me

Option X)???? Any other suggestions?
After one fabuloso collects all the money via paypal. We then create a scavenger-type hunt for Ze to find it, going from location to location getting clues as to where it is. He has to film the whole thing and put the highlights on the site. Oh, and we wouldn't make it easy for him, either ;)
- If I were him I don't think I'd want to go through the effort for a consolation prize. Maybe if it were part of the stakes. arc
- I think this idea is as fantastically awesome as it is impractical! He who says zonk 23:38, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
