Oh and you see that horrid orange bedspread in one of the pictures. Well I was looking through my baby pics and my mum says ” oh I still have that bedsheet somewhere! ” (in Italian because that’s where my folks are from) shes had it stored away for over 40 years!

the trio

came with this note:
The three of us are one year apart, so we did almost everything together growing up. From playing on the same little league teams and making our own home movies/commercials/sketches as kids, to working together as graphic designers and playing in several bands together as adults, we’ve always been close and trying to do something fun & creative. We have photos, videos, and audio cassettes of us saying and doing ridiculous things as kids — which we’d make with our babysitter and then surprise our mom with when she returned from out of town — so why not go with the most ridiculous-looking picture to surprise her with now? We wanted to do something fun and creative for her Christmas present last year and kept coming back to re-creating this triple-matted photo that’s been hanging in her house since 1985. It took a lot of outtakes, squeezing uncomfortably on a piano bench (the same one we sat on in the original, actually) and questioning why we were making the faces we were… but the end result was the highlight of Christmas Day and is now hanging right next to the old one in our mom’s living room. Maybe we’ll re-create it again in another 25 years.

surprise!

came with this note:
Until the 5th month we didn’t know that we were going to have twins (yes they are twins). We went to doctor to make the ultrasound to see if everything was allright, the doctor said that we had a problem. We got worried until he said that we were having twins! Wow what a surprise! At the birth, the first one that came out was my daugther. I said to my wife that it will be two girls! And then, what a surprise! A boy came out!

question?

came with this note:
When I was about that age that I was photographed in the young picture, my favorite word to say was Tylenol, and to say it in the form of a question. Everywhere I would go I would ask people “Tylenol?” and put my hands up to the side and tilt my head to the side. Many of my parents friends still ask me “tylenol?” when the see me now and I am just on the verge of being 22, haha.

with focus

came with this note:
I used to go over to my neighbor’s house and make german cookies right around Christmastime every year. They moved to California straight from Germany after WWII and paid for their house in cash. They lived across the street from me and quickly became my “fake grandparents.” I called them Oma and Opa, which means Grandma and Grandpa in German. When I was little, I thought that was their real names. This picture was taken in their kitchen making another batch of Christmas cookies.

best friends

came with this note:
This was before my sister was born. I’m sitting in the doorway to the house I grew up in, in Jefferson, MA that my parents built, with my dog Tammy next to me. When I was little- I loved animals and art- I used to want to be an artist and veterinarian. While I’m not a veteranarian- I do own a dog and 2 cats and used to own a horse and I still make art to this day. I have very vivid memories of playing outside with Tammy- we had great woods in the back yard with a beautiful river and Tammy and I would explore the woods often…I loved climbing trees and rocks, laying in the grass, and pretending. My grandparents lived next door and I climbed their tree so high once- I was higher than the roof and I found the swaying of the tree in the breeze to be soothing; it was a wonderful way to be by myself and think.

in hiding

came with this note:
When I was younger, I had bangs that I wouldn’t let anyone touch. I can’t remember why, since my mom always fixed my hair anyway, but I hated when my bangs were pinned away from my face. I think I was shy. Or just awkwardly vain, I can’t be sure. But that’s how I can date this picture to when I was about three or four instead of around two–no bangs.

folded hands

came with this note:
Between my mum and her five siblings they have been to every continent of the world, including Antarctica! Between them all they’ve lived in New Zealand, Botswana, Tanzania, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Uzbekistan and travelled to even more places. It’s meant amazing stories but it also means that they don’t always get to see each other all that much. that’s why when they do it is always madness. I don’t have one good memory, I have hundreds. Too many to choose from. But that’s why we wanted to get this picture taken so much. One of the few times all five siblings were together. That’s a memory worth keeping. Times have changed, they all certainly have (it took a lot of debating before my mum agreed to have her “baby” sister on her knee again!) but that won’t change the craziness that I have always loved being part of when I get to see my family.
