When I was about 2 years old I asked my mum if I could paint, and 15 minutes later she found me like this. Now, nearly 19 years later my mum was the one painting my face.

The most striking thing about the pictures to me is that Jacqui is actually quite animated, and most pictures of her she has beaming smiles and goofy faces, yet in the original picture she had the most stoic look , and she somehow pulled it off a second time, all while I continue to look like a goof!

These pictures show me and my friend, an American and a Bulgarian, holding back the Iron Curtain. The first image was taken in 1993. I’m the happy consumer, flush with a licensed Disney character on my shirt and the American can-do-spirit in the form of a rocket on my socks. My friend is less enthused, recovering from the communist era with a Soviet children’s character barely visible above state-mandated fashion.

In today’s image, my friend is the one with the licensed character on his shirt. Our times have changed, but our hold is just as tight.

sun bleached

came with this note:
The year the old picture was taken, I was staying at a hotel called The Americana in Daytona Beach, Florida. My brother and I grouped together with a lot of other kids that were staying at the hotel and a few parents and built a HUGE sand castle together and named it The Americana. Then, every kid got to build their own, smaller sandcastle on the outskirts of the main sandcastle. The hotel took a picture of it with all of us, framed it and posted it in their lobby! I would love to find the picture of our finished masterpiece!

I was born and grew up in Bangalore, never been away from this city for more than a month in my entire life! It’s called Bengaluru nowadays, but that’s only the “official name”, we still call it Bangalore. The city was virtually unknown to the rest of the world when that first photo was clicked. I still remember that day when went for a picnic to Cubbon park, I was 6-7 years old. We lived a couple of blocks away from the park and it was a leisurely walk on empty streets, lined with trees, with hardly any traffic. I can still feel the thrill of sitting on that lion to click that photo. I honestly thought the beast would wake up! That smile in the photo was probably a nervous smile.

a collection

The theme for my 6th birthday must have been “wear a dorky hat.”

This was a gathering of family on one of our Christmases. We held it at a motel and we couldn’t get the little girl 2nd from the left to take off her suit. When we took the 2nd picture we couldn’t get her to put one on!!
This is a picture of my 3 nieces who used to go camping with us when they were little. They are like daughters to us. We enjoyed many hours at the lake and this was one of those rare sisterly moments when they were small. They’ve grown into fine young women whom we still get together with every year at the lake.

This picture was taken on Christmas Day, 1974. Cindy lives in Vienna, Austria and I live in Portland, Oregon, but we travel back home to Indiana every year for a visit. Since she’s the baby of the family and just turned 40, we thought it would be fun to recreate our favorite childhood photo of us together.

fitting under

came with this note:
Because actually my brother and I were always quarreling when we were young, that’s why this picture is one of the few ones of us sharing something in harmony. Although, there is acutally another photo of us a few years later where we share another lolly – it seems that lollies always made us forget our fights and be peaceful. :)
