« hung over | Main | indaba treasures_1 » February 20, 2006 my riski've been working on a show about the history of airplane safety, and was pleased to come across a sign in Johannesburg airport - as you enter the airport you pass under a large sign that says: "enter at your own risk". I'd say they win points for simplicity. edited to add: here's a pic: Posted by zefrank at February 20, 2006 2:59 AM |

I've never thought of it that way, but I suppose that's true... anything can happen in an airport.

"enter at your own risk" is a common mistranslation (from the isizulu) of "have a nice flight". this is simply another example of what happens when your translator is a surly teen who has learned to speak english off the internet and by playing Quake. it's the same as kruschev's "we will bury you" translation debacle. or hamas's "death to all israelis", which they picked up on the playground by hanging around north korea as it chanted "america sucks" and gave south korea a wedgie when it wasn't looking.

in Joeys (Johannesburg) -
all our "ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK" signs should actually be changed to "NO ENTRY" signs...
simple...
effective...?
