The thing about the Gladwell book is that a lot of those examples of rapid cognition (like the Van Ripper example Meghan mentions, or Dr. Gottmann, the divorce predictor interviewed at the beginning of the book) are the result of very intensive, very deliberate, and definitely *non*-rapid cognition. A quick gloss of the book might lead you to feel justified in "going with your gut", rather than stopping todeliberate--but I think really the lesson (if there's anything more to "Blink!" than engaging journalistic navel-gazing) is that you need to *practice* instinct, i.e. try and fail (or succeed if you're lucky) enough times that you learn subconsciously what failure (or success if you're lucky) feels like--then you'll be amazingly good without exactly knowing why. Wisdom over reflex.
