a children's song for adults :: anxiety

Laura wrote to ask if i could write a song to remind her to chill out when she got anxious. I asked people to sing along to a basic track and send me the results as audio files. After I had about 20 in total I mixed the results together to create the chorus of the tune (special thanks to everyone that sent in audio) :: download below :: you name the price

Thank you! (To Ze and all who sang.)

By amazing coincidence I have been experiencing my first ever real anxiety this week (even had a very mild panic attack...so strange), and this song is exactly what I needed to hear.

The array of voices makes it oh so powerful.

Posted by: Robin at September 17, 2008 6:51 PM

Wow, incredible!

Posted by: John Beck at September 17, 2008 7:09 PM

Thanks Ze and Laura. I needed this.

Posted by: Sarah at September 17, 2008 7:40 PM

Ahhh... how nice it is to hear a familiar voice again. Only Ze could create something this beautiful.

Posted by: Adam at September 17, 2008 8:00 PM

Ze, everyone who contributed,

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Its beautiful. and its perfect.

Posted by: Laura at September 17, 2008 8:04 PM

So cool to hear my voice in this -- and it's a great tune, too. Totally stashed for my next freakout.

Posted by: Laurie J at September 17, 2008 8:07 PM

Thanks for that. I look forward to the download.

Posted by: Daniel Ari at September 17, 2008 8:07 PM

Never been busier - this song just takes the edge right off...

Posted by: Josh at September 17, 2008 8:27 PM

Although i'm not feeling any deep anxiety right now, this still made me feel better about today. The simple fact that so many people contributed to this small but very moving song, makes be glad that this website still continues to function and grow.

So just a general thanks to Ze and everyeone else who made or listened.

Posted by: Harland at September 17, 2008 9:51 PM

maybe I don't need to throw all my stuff in my beater and drive down to south america...maybe things will be fine, maybe I am ok.

Posted by: tish at September 18, 2008 12:51 AM

Gah, hearing that right after Johnathan Coulton's "I Feel Fantastic" was like shifting from fifth to 3rd without the clutch. Or running into an invisible wall made of calm.

But a nice song, I'll enjoy it more once I take care of this abrupt nosebleed.

Posted by: Blank-Mage at September 18, 2008 1:14 AM

total cool rockness. LOVE it!

Posted by: Shelley Noble at September 18, 2008 1:21 AM

Let's do it again!

I can feel my neural pathways eschewing the negative as we sing! I'm convinced, and breathing.

Posted by: Jeano at September 18, 2008 3:19 AM

it's all I need to hear sometimes.

Posted by: ingrid at September 18, 2008 5:45 AM

Posted by: Sarah at September 18, 2008 6:52 AM

It is many kinds of awesome that you can ask a bunch of people in lots of different places to sing and then mix them into a chorus of calmness. This reaffirms my happiness with the intertubes.

Posted by: Paul Hoffman at September 18, 2008 7:39 PM

I just want to say thank you. This song is so heartwarming. Totally what I needed to hear, considering I had a panic attack a few hours ago and have been dealing with depression for a few months...

FYI (ie not for posting on the world wide web ;)
my 2002 VW still has a cassette player built
(google search for "endless loop cassette" netted this: )

ps Ze I have thought of a side business for you:
itunes downloads for the "tapes?" like the hypnotists used to sell to help people stop smoking, loose weight etc.
I will try to track the one's i know of that were made in 1979 and advertised in Cosmotolatin magazine for $10. down for you .... they are (were?) very effective for some people.

Posted by: Lynne at September 20, 2008 3:04 PM

Hey, Ze--
My partner wakes up every day at 6am and has serious anxiety. I don't know what to do, really-- be supportive, but it seems to need more than that. She's been seeing a therapist about it, but I'm not sure it's really helping.
She's always liked you and your stuff a lot, so I'm hoping this may help her.
For some reason, PayPal would only let me pay $1. If this helps, it's worth as much as the $75/wk we spend on therapy.
It's worth $5 even if it doesn't-- it's really good, and I feel better already.

Johnathan Coulton, ay? Thats hawesome.

Posted by: Madrigorne at September 22, 2008 7:20 AM

It turned out wonderfully. This was a really good idea.

Posted by: Rory at September 22, 2008 10:08 AM

Interestingly, I get a different reaction when listening to this song:
I'm feeling a bit stressed at the moment, but generally deal well with stress and problems - however, listening to this song make me break into tears suddenly, and brought all my worries to the front!

Thing is, I'm sure I'll be fine :0) - so maybe, while this song relaxes anxious people, it makes unworried people worried?? LOL Or maybe I'm just too tired.

My 2-year old daughter, sitting on my lap, loved it, stopped everything she was doing (drawing), sat and listened intently, and then kept asking for it to be played again.
We stopped at the 11th time :0)

I watched The Show and also loved "This is a song that I sing, when I'm scared of something.." - can we download that one, like we can download this one?

Luv, and thanks,

Posted by: Susanna at September 22, 2008 10:18 AM

I feel like the sun came down with his mighty shades made of dragon tears, and gave me a warm, but not too warm, hug of sunlight.

If all of religion could be summed up into one song that clearly let the listener see what "it's all about"...

And it's still just a silly little song based on well known and popular musical concepts.

I thank you(all) for it.

Really, it's such a beautiful song, I can't help but listen to it on repeat (I know, kind of obsessive much, eh?).

In September of '08 you requested input from your public for the Chill Out song. My daughter and I submitted vocals and you chose her as the solo child's voice. Today (Dec 22 09) I sit in Tokyo on a business trip longing to be back home for Christmas in Vancouver. I remembered Chill Out. Played it. Hearing my daughters voice made me long for home even more but also provided me comfort. Yes. I'll be okay, I'll be home in time for Christmas, just breathe.

Thank you Ze,

Cheers and Merry Christmas

Found your page about a year ago, watched The Show (in its entirety) in about a week, played around on the site for a few weeks, loved it, but as time passed I forgot about it. Since then I've been through the hardest year of my life resulting in me hitting rock bottom about a month ago. Spent a few weeks in a numb, self destructive state. Yesterday I found your site again, remembered how much what you did touched me back then. The last 24 hours I've been going through some of the projects, listening to the songs, it's amazing how much inspiration I scanned over. You're my hero, man. If there were more people like you in the world, it would be a better place. Keep it up.

That's the funniest thing I have heard in ages. Though I had to listen to it in short periods of about five seconds which is about as long as I could manage before the sweetness started to choke me.
