Me, I found The God of Small Things to be soul-crushingly sad and depressing and upsetting. Haven't read Gilead yet, but loved her first book Housekeeping.

I second your recommendation of The God of Small Things.

The God of Small Things is an incredible book. It rips me apart every time I reread it...

Housekeeping (Marilynne Robinson's first book) is one of my favorites of all time. Gilead is amazing, in a completely different way.

.....they do look good....a roy is a favorite...

earlier today in the snow i was just thinking of this AMAZINGly beautiful book that i got at a huge florida thriftstore and then had to sit in my car and not put down till it was done, and then cry cause it was so outta left field lovely...
don't read anything about it before, casue amazon etc make it sound like bad sci fi....but it is not at all like that,
just get it, and read it....

It's called Land O' Goshen by Charles McNair

there's also another pretty one in a similar vein but set in the keys weirdly enough...

Fiskadoro by Denis Johnston

they both wom awards yada ya...and are oddly timeless and inspiring [something i for one need a big fat shot of this year]
i think you would like them too....

I read 'God of Small Things,' and really enjoyed it also. There's a section in there that's just so beautiful. The descriptions of the traveling troupe of actors is wonderful. Good choice and I'm going to have to reread it now. :-)

Ms. Roy is one of my heroes. See "Come September" if you can.

I'm reading 'The God of Small Things' at the mo, loving it so far. I second the "Come September" recommendation.

If you enjoyed 'God of Small Things" you should read "The unyielding clamour of the night" by Neil Bisoondath. My current favourite book.

Ze, if you liked Gilead, read the companion novel Home. Gently, beautifully sad, yet redemptive.

GoST is brilliant.

If you're gonna recommend books, why not recommend mine? Everybody likes it, and it can even be described in three words. Maybe two and a half. I'll send you a copy.
