CARP.
My sincere sympathies...

You'll be fine. I did the same thing with most of a bottle of soda. I took my lovely MacBook over to the corner, removed the battery and left it alone for between 3 days and a week. Unless you spilled a gravy-boat-ful of coffee full of sugar on it, it's likely that it will pull through.
Good luck!

that sucks...

ARRRRRGHHH!

I did that recently, too -- to a MacBook that I had just purchased in April. I turned it over immediately, took out the battery, and left it tented to dry out for a week. Then I took it in for repair. New hard drive, new battery cables, new logic board. Warranty covered cause I guess they didn't realize liquid damage. I know not exactly honest, but... geez. Apple has my soul. I have bought mucho from them over the years.

Wishing you well...

(And yes, I still drink coffee near my laptop, but I put it in a mug. No paper cups.)

You should have just spilled your laptop all over your coffee. It is WAY cheaper to just get a new coffee!

Posted by: SerialK at February 5, 2009 11:00 PM

was there some awesome over the top hilarious throw your arms around like a madman funny thing you saw...?

Posted by: darin at February 5, 2009 11:49 PM

Awe, that's too bad. Is it a PowerBook or a MacBook Pro?

I repair those things for a living if I can be of any help.

Posted by: Ben at February 6, 2009 1:22 AM

oh noes

Posted by: gabe at February 6, 2009 3:25 AM

That's too bad. I feel really sorry for you. Did the same two years ago with a pint of Guinness.

Posted by: borsti at February 6, 2009 3:37 AM

Quick, grab a straw!

Posted by: Pachunka at February 6, 2009 4:48 AM

Caffeinating your laptop won't boost its performance, you know.

Posted by: Ian Howarth at February 6, 2009 5:03 AM

Doh!!! So sorry to hear that.

Have you tried sopping it up with a couple croissants?

Were you doing a latte-style reenactment of SNL's classic, "The Pepsi Syndrome"?

Posted by: Paperotta at February 6, 2009 6:28 AM

Oh Ze, I am so sorry. That sucks.

Posted by: nbirkel at February 6, 2009 9:21 AM

just suck it out and use the blow dryer.

Posted by: Renee at February 6, 2009 10:15 AM

Sorry about the computer. That sucks.

I left for Peace Corps in late September 2006 so I never got to see the end of the show. Yesterday I finally caught up to the end.

You really started something beautiful Ze. Thanks.

Posted by: jay aoyama at February 6, 2009 11:23 AM

That's pretty upsetting. ):

Posted by: Kake at February 6, 2009 11:58 AM

Wow. Bizzare, man. I was just on my way to your site and I thought, "gee, I wonder what Ze Frank's computer setup is like." Apparently at least part of it is coffee-like.

Good luck! I hope she can muster up the strength to go on.

Posted by: jeano at February 6, 2009 12:26 PM

That sucks Ze! Although, I smell an opportunity for some fun with a coffee-soaked laptop.

Posted by: Alex at February 6, 2009 12:36 PM

You should just keep using it like it never broke. Somebody is bound to take pity on you and just donate one to your cause.

Posted by: Gdub at February 6, 2009 2:22 PM

a "shamwow" moment..too late...

Posted by: nancy pene at February 6, 2009 2:54 PM

Sorry to hear about the coffee incident, hope she dries out and recovers.
Mine just passed in a slightly more violent manner -- a friend had it and was bringing it to me but left it on the roof of the car - by the time she realized the error - it had fallen off and been run over. Am considering using the remnants in some sort of dia de los muertos altar to commemorate all lost laptops.

Posted by: Sophia at February 6, 2009 4:32 PM

omg... I hope it wasn't Peet's. 'cuz that would be a shame.

I just got my laptop stolen.... I love dorm life....

Posted by: MichaelWebster at February 9, 2009 9:10 AM

Spilled coffee on my laptop last year - just a few drops.

Had to replace it. Luckily it was under warranty.

Buy a Thinkpad. Liquids just go through. It is really like that. You can take a glass of water and slowly spil it over the keys. Its designed with small channels and holes to guide the water out on the bottom.

:-)

Poor Ze. So that's why you were at my Apple store. :(

Posted by: Stephagal at February 22, 2009 2:40 AM

Ouch!!! I did the same, as if in slow motion the cup fulla joe
floated above for a moment and then came to a blood curtling splash on my mac pro laptop. I wanted to cry. Out of warrenty. $1,400 later everything is just fine. Still, I love my Mac. Now I sip my coffee at a respectable distance.

You could try getting one of those new "Adkaf" desktop coffee mug holders. They hold you mug on your desk so that you can't knock it over and they look great.
